Fabspeed Muffler Bypass install
Fabspeed Muffler Bypass install
Hey guys and gals. I purchased some Fabspeed Muffler Bypass pipes for my MY99 996. Is it a DIY job to take off the exisiting mufflers and put these on? Any advice, tips or tricks?
Thanks!

It is a real simple install. Remove 3 screws from each muffler bracket, 2 screws from tail pipe ring and one side is off. Connect bypass pipe to cat, adjust for proper position, tighten 2 screws and one side is done. Do the other side the same way, but use your other hand.
No need to remove wheels or anything else. Just jack the car up on the side you are working on, enough to fit under on your back. Turn muffler 90 degrees to remove from under car.
Waaaaaaaaay too loud for a street car IMO.

fabspeed bypass
How does the noise level on this fabspeed muffler bypass compares to a 996 c2 with just a fabspeed muffler upgrade? (with stock headers & cat)?
Or should i just stick to the fabspeed maxflo muffler upgrade for a daily street car?

Personally, I think the bypass pipes make the car sound like **** at sny engine speed of less than WOT. The noise level does not faciltate easy driving though any neighborhood where there are people and many may think you have a bad muffler. If I was 18 again, my opinion might be different. There is no way that you could be at a stop light next to a cop and pull away without getting a ticket, The noise exceeds, by far, all legal levels.
What I did on my 99C2 is swap my mufflers with ones from a 2003 996. These mufflers (with brackets) bolt right on exactly like the stock ones. I then went to Midas and had them install a by pass pipe, just like the PSE does. Total cost was less than $150. Porsche uses the same mufflers for their PSE and simply add the bypass pipe and valve.
I now have fulltime PSE with a great sound and still legal. There are probably plenty of Porsche mufflers sitting in people's garages looking for a home that you can get for the cost of shipping.
Agree with 99 on this one, unless you're 17, bypass pipes are tooooo louddd for the street. I use them at the track, but hate the drive to/from the track with them( now I change them out at the track), a splitting headache is assured!

Thanks fellas. I think i will just go with the maxflo muffler for now and see how i like the sound and performance. If anything, I will add headers and hi-perf. cat this coming spring.
BTW- would you go with the fabspeed air intake or the evo? Thx
