What do you think I should do 996 owners?
One of my best friends owns a dealership and recently picked up a 99 996 C2 Black/Black 6speed with 82K miles. It has an amp, 6 disc indash cd player, stereo system, and wheels with a polished lip. He said it was repoed and the bank sold it at Manheim. At the auctions it was said to make a weird noise from the transmission - but after inspection it was the giant 285/18 size tires that were rubbing - not the transmission. My question is - should I jump on this deal because he will sell it to me for $23K. Black is not my ideal choice, but its really cheap. If anyone in Orange County, CA can recommend me a PPI or certified Porsche guy to look over and inspect the car in and out - please let me know. Are there any other concerns I should be worried about?
My original choices in order were white, red, and black - all with aero kit. I am just thinking of getting this deal and slapping on some body kit and wheels. Is this an opportunity knocking at my door or a potential mess? Please let me know your thoughts!

82k. Ouch.
It is cheap, that's for sure.
A normal aero car with lower mileage will likely be at least $15k more.
So, sa you get the aero kit for $7k after paint... You have $8k left. Are fewer miles worth it to ya?
Either way, it sounds like it can be a good experience. Just be positive that it was the tires, not the transmission. I'd get it checked out with 82k though. Sorry I dont know anyone...

I had a similar deal with a friend's dealership. Has, knock on wood, worked quite well so far. I'm very happy with the car and have put 30k miles on it since buying it about a year ago.
gunna test drive the car and do a little visual inspection. If he decides to go ahead and sell to me, I will do a PPI and see how things go. I cant believe I can buy P-car for 4K less than my evo8...
Are you sure it was the 285s making the noise? My service guy said there is no problem running 285s on my 01 996 C2. He also said 235s on the front would fit but in tight corners, hard on the steering it would rub.

I'm sure he bought it at auction with the "new transmission" factored into the price, so even at 23k if it's not the tires, and you do need a tranmission it's still worth it even if you do have to drop 5k-7k in for a new tranny(and put a new clutch and RMS in) it's still a great deal.
BTW: I have an 03 and it came with 285's on the car. Even with 285's and a moderatly lowered car your tires won't hit, unless he had very aggressive spacers or offsets on the rims. FYI: with the 265 tires the factory approves 17mm spacers on the OEM wheels and with 285's I have run 15mm techart spacers (with OEM 10" wheels) on a lowered car with no problem. So if the car had the right rims/offsets 285's are fine.

just also make sure you have some reserve funds for repairs etc. i personally would only buy pre-facelift 996 w aerokit. given the price of aerokit, i'd probly not do the upgrade. therefore, i'd buy one with aerokit already there. $23k is a really good price if everything checks out. however, make sure it's what you really want. i'd go for a long drive followed up with a good inspection including compression check. also check for service and warranty repair history.
It sounds like this one, could it be? Not trying to start anything, but they sure sound similar, both in SoCal, both '99s, both black/black w/ 82k miles.
