R & R of Mufflers

Does anyone have access to DIY instructions for the R & R of the mufflers on a 2001 996 C4? It appears to me that you need to remove the rear bumper first for best access, is this true? Thanks in advance for your help!

what does R&R mean? i assume you're trying to install some new mufflers.

if you're trying to install new mufflers on your 996, you DO NOT need to remove the bumper. your best bet is just remove the rear wheels to gain access, although that's not even totally necessary. go to renntech.org for instructions.

Thank you for your response and R & R (Remove & Replace) is common to my line of work sorry I fall into these abbreviation when I shouldn't. I tried the renntech.org, I am not a member but if they have it there I will join.

i don't think you need to join. it should be in their DIY section.

it's really quite simple though if you're even remotely handy.

I just did this. I would say it's a 1 to 1.5 hour job the first time depending on how tough the muffler to cat clamps are to break free. All in all it was pretty simple and I was able to did it without removing anything at all...and it was my first underbody mod and the clamps were a pain. However, I've now flipped the muffler brackets so the next time I need to R&R the mufflers I suspect it will only take 10 minutes per side.

Get the renntech DYI sheet. It makes it all clear.

hth

I'd recommend joining even if you don't necessarily find what you want for this inquiry. There is a wealth of information there for technical issues and Loren (moderator/admin) is *extremely* helpful with specific tech questions.

Here's the Renntech link on DIY installing bypass pipes / removing mufflers- It was not super easy to find.

There are nice pics of taking everything apart such as rear bumper removal and removing mufflers. I know this is an old thread however figured it might help the next person searching on the 6 for this info.

I did mine - several times - without removing the wheels or the bumper.
