Strange noise from the Rear

My wifes car 2002 C2 suddenly has some strange noise from the engine area. It happens like 3 days ago. When switch to manual gear 1st gear up to 3000 rpm, 2nd gear 3000 rpm and up , it has the jet plane pitch sound like geee, geeeeeeeeeee, the higher the rpm the higher the geeeeeeeee noise. When use automatic gear, the car doesn't go smooth, feels jerking little bid. Would that be from the engine or the transmission? Does anyone seen problem like that? Also we found out that the power steering fluid container is empty, we pull out the cab and check level , It just looks completely dry. Can I just use regular power steering fluid or must get it from dealer.
Now she is afraid driving that cause the noise. How do I check transmission fluid? The manual doesn't show how. Any feedback will be great . Thanks.

I've seen one PSF go dry like yours and so I figured PSF was better than none so agreed the owner on his end. After a full bottle the 996 was back on the road. Yes, we had no other choice but to use a little some from AutoZone since this was found out over the weekend.
