Manual says no warm up?

Whenever I start my car from cold I always let it idle until the reves drop before I take off. Nor do I do any spirited driving until it reaches operating temp. I just stumbled across in the manual where is says to drive the car immediately! Do they mean immediately after the reves drop, or do they mean, like, immediately?

I can’t imagine taking off before the reves drop. What do you guys do?

i wait about 20-30 sec for the rev to drop. take it easy until 180 degrees when engine is warmed up.

starting and immediately drive off can't be great as oil is still circulating thru. don't let it sit for longer than a few mins either as the cats need to warm up to minimize pollution and you'll be wasting gas.

I too wait until the RPMs drop..... I figure if they designed the RPMs to be high up for a "few" it was for a reason.....

I also wait for the RPMs to drop to take off...and always wait for the car to be warmed before driving the way the car should be driven.

I guess I'm thinking that Porsche programed the "warm up" cycle into the ECU for a reason. So, why would they then say "drive immediately?" I put 135,000 miles on my 993 and always warmed her up and never had a problem. I took Paxil for a month after I sold that car. Now, I'm just as in love with my 996. I just keep thinking of my poor RMS and want to do everything in my power to protect it!!

There are a couple of hypotheses:

1. The strict environmental regulations in Germany impose short warm-up times (less pollution)
2. It is important to warm up multiple components (e.g., tranny) at the same time you are warming the engine

I still let the car warm just a bit before backing out of the garage and of course let it come to temp. before getting on it.

Warmup?

My neighborhood has a twenty five mle per hour speed limit, and I live 2 miles from the front gate. Thats my warmup!
I have three Porsches, one w/5600 miles, one w/113,000 miles, and one with 59,000 miles. Use your own judgement.

In warmer climates, I start, let idle settle for 5 seconds (while I am putting on the seatbelt and getting organized), drive away slowly until the engine at optimim operating temperature...and then rip it.

In freezing climate,s I start it, and let the idle stabilize for 30-60 seconds, then continue as above.

Ah Jorge, they say you really can't appreciate the wonderful weather in southern california until you have had a miserable winter. Then again, I'm told it sometimes drops into the 50s down there. Brrrr....
