Red face Ghetto 996 ... me?

Well, last night cruising down the freeway towards Sacramento...I see this gold thing fly up from the hood and over the car, a second later...a black thing. I am thinking to myself that Caltrans needs to do a better job of keeping our highways clean, this is ridiculous. Well, I arrive at my destination and change from my driving shoes to regular shoes, which are in the front ...and OMG...someone stole my hood badge!! I am laughing...okay, then I'm mad, and looking for damage...none. The darned thing just broke clean off and THAT was what I saw flying up at me on the freeway. Anyone else had this happen?

I called the dealer, who told me that this can happen when you close the hood using them emblem, which I do not, nor have I ever. (Which is the reason for my post, the warning) So now, I am embarrassed to drive anywhere...well, at least until I get a new one.

You know, I thought about it, and on my Silver Boxster, I had successfully removed every bit of amber/gold on the car. And it looked great, I had the silver badging. Whomever got my BoxS got that badge as well, I couldn't find a taker for it when I traded her in. However, on this car, I think the gold badge looks good with the SY. And actually, now that there is no badge at all, I kinda like it without completely. Hhhmmm...perhaps on my next Pcar.

Good thing it didn't do any damage.

Since you now have 2 holes in your hood, you don't want to go out in the rain!!

I've always closed my hood by pressing down on the emblem. Less risk of damaging or denting the hood this way.

You are actually at more risk closing your hood by using the leverage of your emblem then using gentle pressure around it. I think that it even warns you against using the emblem to shut the hood in the manual.

yea I used the emblem to close the hood a couple times and it seems like the pressure used to close it caused the paint to become damaged.

ESK, Thats more of a risk of damaging your hood, never close your hood from the emblem, always psotion your hands on the sides of the emblem and lower towards the bumper.

Robyn, I have heard of that happening before, happy to hear you didnt encounter any damage.

Let me be more clear. I pull the hood down with my fingers on front edge of hood until it's in the"popped" position. Then, I used the palm of my hand/heel of my thumb and carefully push down on the emblem until it's closed all the way.

How does this damage the paint? I'm not even touching the paint. This is probably one of strongest parts of the hood - directly over the locking mechanism. I've been doing this for nearly 30 years and on probably that many Porsches without a problem.

Hood is not damged the emblem is

You have to look at several year old Porsches to tell how poeple close their trunk. Pushing down on the emblem damages it. It causes it slowly bend over the years. I concours my cars and their are two ways to close the trunk according to the experts. Lower the hood till it catches than use the side of your hand directly under the emblem and push down the rest of the way. The best way is to lowerr it till it catches and than use your fingertips at the corners of the hood. Why there you ask , if you look that is where the trunk stops are and it is slightly stronger there. Never ever push on the emblem

Then some of you local guys who do this to close the front trunk come and see me to solder the broken mounting studs back on.

How much pressure are you guys and gals using to close your hoods anyway?

Robyn - leverage? The hood practically closes itself.
Vik - paint issues. They look like rock chips!

Like I said, I'll continue to close my hood they way I have done so for 30 years. And, if I happen to break off the mounting studs, I'll by a new one from Ralph Boothe! BTW, I hear he adds a special strengthening adhedisive to his studs during the plating process!
