Unhappy engine damaged --> replacement needed?!?!

Ok so you may not believe this-

My Dad was pulling out of a driveway the other night, and as he turned onto the street, he turned a little too tight and one of the rear wheels sorta dropped off the curb and down onto the street -- this short fall caused the underside of the engine to strike the curb (or street?) and fluid started leaking (spraying?) all over.

Assuming the coolant reservoire had been punctured, he was more annoyed than devasted. The car got towed but then the next day Sonnen Porsche gave the fateful prognosis and my Dad's annoyance turned to shocked disbelief:

The damage was NOT to the coolant reservoir, but to the actual engine itself ... and the damage was so severe that whereas a repair was POSSIBLE -- it would be EXTREMELY difficult, and would likely never be perfect.

Their suggestion? Install a new (read: "rebuilt" -- whatever that means, exactly) engine.

Thoughts from any of you?

They mean a remanufactured....not rebuilt engine...it means an engine that did not pass their specs was pulled apart, all internals replaced, retested, and then used for replacement engines. These engines have never been in customer cars and are usually a little mean they are more solid as they have been tested and retested....i have one and have had no issues. I would prefer it to a "new" one.

Heres an idea....call your insurance company....pay your deductable and get your car fixed with a remanufactured engine and you will be better than new...and hopefully your rates wont go up.

sometimes what the $tealer claimed might be exaggerated. You might want to get an estimate from an Indy.

'Might be' may be correct.....all dealerships are not alike.....likewise I would not necessarily assume an 'Indy' to be credible unless you know them well.

On what's wrong with the engine....personally I would want a specific & detailed explanation of what they see was damaged.....that explanation works well if it's given to you as you both look up at the car while it's on the hoist.

An installed reman 996 3.6 that he has will be $10,000-12,000. Most are re-works off the original line, but I don't believe all are. I believe they should carry a 24 mo warranty.

Good luck to your dad.

FVD-USA sells a 3.8 engine that will fit any 996 so they say for about $23,000 which includes installation and you get to keep your core. Check out www.fvd.us anyone done this?

Well where are you getting it. Porsche does not officially allow rebuilding. So if you are getting it from Porsche its remanufactured, meaning its NEVER been in a car on the road and failed....Rebuilt means that....a failed engine is dismantled and rebuilt....A remanufactured is just as good, if not better than new. Rebuilt is another story, great if its rebuilt properly, but if its not, you can have issues, and no way to know if it was done properly unless you know the engine builder and their reputation for quality rebuilds.
