I have the Bose, it is not the best system for the money but the sound quality is quite good, good enough that I can live without going after market and with it, all the potential hassle. When I am driving, I enjoy the sound track from the engine more than anything else....If I want good music, I have my stereo system at home

 

FWIW,
i had the hifi in my '01, very poor quality.
i have the BOSE in my '03. now granted its not the best for sound, but it sure is a lot better than stock/hifi. i am much happier with this set up. i did not want to spend large for an aftermarket set up. with the MOST, any aftermarket will be very costly because they will have to totally rewire as pointed out. all the other mods can be done later as your budget recovers. yes i have the PSE but at times need to hear music.
if i had to do it over again, i would still get the BOSE.

I have had Bose systems in several cars. None were wonderful, but the 911 system is one of the better ones. Unless you are an audiophile and willing to spend a lot of money, you'll probably be satisfied with the Bose.
