Homelink visor button installation
Homelink visor button installation
I have read through all of the previous threads about installing a remote using various switches.
Has anyone simply tried going to an car salvage yard and buying a visor with the homelink buttons on it? I thought a clean install would be to get the switch and have it installed on the visor connecting to the power for the mirror. Anyone have any thoughts about doing that?

I was trying to figure out the same thing, but thought it might work with the BMW UGDO system. I had one before on my M5 and it was basically connected to a panel infront of the sunroof switch. Anyone think it will work?
The one thing that discouraged me about the BMW system is the bulk of the box. The homelink visor buttons are extremely compact. I was thinking that since there is power up there, any professional installer should be able to make it look OEM.

There are many approaches to the garage door opener unit not involving the Home Link unit. I have seen push buttons placed in a dash switch position connected to the standard remote transmitter which is mounted in a good position under the dash and powered by the car's voltage. I have chosen the easy way out. I bought a mini remote (key chain size) from Stanley on the web which just fits into the ashtray. Works just fine and you can close the ashtray cover when not using it.
If you really want to buy a Homelink setup for your car...
you can buy it from this place: www.jpcustoms.com
The problem is that these things are so big, they just won't fit in a 996 visor. So your problem is where to install the bulky thing. I saw one custom install where they had put it in the rear part of the center console. That's about the least convenient place to install it.
In my car, I have a remote garage door opener kit that I installed in the lighting console above the mirror (I have a coupe). It looks very much like a Homelink system.
