HELP! Halfway thru PSE install and stuck!

I need help! I'm halfway through PSE install (mufflers only) and stuck! Following Loren's DIY and doing one side at a time, I've removed the old muffler and the new one is mounted and the exhaust tip in attached (loosely), but I can't get the new muffler connected to the cat pipe. Is there some kind of spreader I can use to open up the cat pipe just a fraction??

The car is a '99 996 C2 Coupe.

Isn't there a collar that goes over the two of them that was on your car before you took off the stock mufflers? I don't think any of the pipes fit over each other for that setup, I think they fit flush and the collar clamps around them.

Check it out in this pic of mine. This is the stock exhaust. The collar has two bolts in it, and I already took off the nuts in this pic:
