will be parking outdoors - need security devices?

I'll be parking in a outdoor public lot from now on.

Should I be buying one of those steering wheel locks? I hate how it looks. Lojack seems to be an option but I don't know how well it will work in Manhattan (my gps hardly gets a signal).

Quite concerned with theft / someone breaking the window etc / car being keyed etc.

Think a car cover will work? I'm thinking of keeping the car dirty to make it less attractive.

Any tips thanks.

You could have a motion/inclination sensor as well as a shock sensor added to the alarm. I had this done, but I must say, it took several return visits to the installer to get it to stop causing false alarms. Cost was only $200 though.

Try the new Viper alarm it has a transciever and reciever that will page you up 2 blocks away and tell exactly what was activated.

Thanks. I live around 5-6 blocks away so i don't think it will be much use.

Is the factory alarm / central locking system useless?

I think the factory alarm is just fine. It protects the doors, trunk and center console. It also has an ultrasonic interior motion detector. However, it offers no protection against your car being towed, which, with the coded ignition, is probably the only way your car will be stolen without the key.

ok thats good..

i don't think a person can steal my car with a tow truck without being obvious. The car is parked on the roof and the tow truck will have to go down 7 floors. I was just concerned that people might be able to start my car and drive away.. (like gone in 60 secs.. hehe)

Anyways more of a concern is getting the car keyed / windows broken. Hopefully I'm good.

If a pro wants your car, he will get it.

I usually hit the Lower East Side before 6 a.m. One morning I see a flat bed taking a car with its alarm going off and a bunch of guys wearing blue FBI-type jackets with "Repo Agent" on the back. I even think some of them had exposed handguns on their belts. It was interesting to watch but I never asked for their ID. As for vandalism, my BMWs have never been touched but somebody keyed two doors and the trunk of my WRX. I must have cut somebody off

Nothing will keep your car from acts of vandalism of even acts of carelessness. After market car alarms are very easy to bypass by professional thieves and they can always flat bed your Porsche. It took a towing company less than 15 minutes to stick my e46 M3 on a flat bed truck and it would take much less time if the driver had not been extra careful with the process. Lo Jack is a good idea if they have good coverage in your area. A phone call to them is a good idea. A car cover can protect your car from minor scratches and it shouldn't attract too much attention as long as it isn't plaster with Porsche emblems or labels. In the end, however, nothing will guarantee your Porsche's safety and you will have to live with a certain amount of uncertainty every time step away from it. You could by a beater and drive it to work!
