Hi, I purchased a pre-owned, Porsche certified 996 C4S about a year ago from a "reputable" dealership and am currently trying to sell it. The problem is, I just found out that a portion of the car was repainted (elcometer tested), and two potential buyers have balked at buying the car because of it. Should my dealer have disclosed the paint job to me? Can the car be Porsche certified if it was repainted? Do I have a legitimate gripe against the dealer? Yes, in retrospect, I should have checked the paint job myself, but with the naked eye it is impossible to see where it was repainted!

Any help would be great!

 

Where was the repaint? It cannot be CPOd if it was in an accident....but if they resprayed a panel for chips, etc...then maybe it wasnt....what you should really wanna know if there is accident damage, if so, the yes you have a legitimate gripe with the dealer.....

 

I wonder if the dealer knows...I wonder what type of certification they did.. paper?

 

Where was the repaint? Alot of Porsche have been repainted near the front lights because they have been stolen before...

 

They can't sell a CPO car if it was in an accident, now if they did/didn't know because the repair was excellent, either way you can go after them. If it was only for paint chips or a keyed then no.

 

There is a big misconception about CPO'd cars. They CAN be CPO'd if they were in an accident. The only factor that comes into play is frame damage. The way it works is a rep from the manufacturer comes and checks the car out. If the repair is within OEM specs, it can be CPO'd. The dealer is not required to disclose the accident, but they cannot say it was never involved in one. That is why I always get my cars checked out by an independent mechanic.

 

Did you call the dealer yet to voice your concern? If they are reputable, they should be willing to give a memo on company letterhead as to what may have been repaired, or that a potential buyer has nothing to worry about. Worst case scenario, trade the car in and have them give you full retail allowance for the car.

 

Part of the 100 point inspection is verifying that there was never any major body damage...It CANNOT be CPO'd if there was.

paint thickness is actually one of the things they check when you trade in/lease return a porsche. They knew.

 

My info comes from the manufacturer, just my 2cents.

Now this sounds very off base to ask....why would any potential buyers ask or come ready to inspect the paint in this manner?
These aren't high end machines that have a limited number or history like a 1955 original.
So in the coming weeks when I have my nose redone due to excessive stone chips and pitting, my will be suspect of an accident???

 

if resprayed cuz of cosmetic issues like chips... who cares. i wouldn't mind at all.

now if in a fender bender .... not sure. if frame bent? hell no.

 

A year ago there was a C4S tip at one of the local dealers that had been keyed on every panel and repainted and guess what?... it was sold as a CPO! I think if the repaint was only for cosmetic purposes and no panels were replaced, it's okay.
BTW: car belonged to a rennlister who had it stolen from his driveway and when the insurance recovered it, he moved on to a new one and traded it back to the dealer.
