Replacing CD Changer w/ MP3 CD Changer

Hello all,

As I always do with any forum, I did a search before I started a new thread. I have '99 996 with the PCM/CD Changer/Nav. Have any of you thought about or replaced the stock CD Changer with a MP3 CD changer? I realize iPod is the best way to go, but since I already have a CD Changer I thought why not just burn the MP3's onto a disk and then put 6 disks in and be set. Surely there is a MP3 CD Changer that will work with the PCM head unit?

Thank you,

Yea ,Not that i am aware off, however i know there is a company that is working on a IPOD adapter to work on the Porsche head unit. That unit may be ready but last i heard it wasnt ready.

I would sell the OEM Nav and CHanger and get a 7in in-dash DVD/MP3 unit + Nav if you want it...

Much better features and capabilities for around $700. You wont have a changer but you can keep a few CDs in the cabin. With an MP3 DVD you cant go on a road trip long enough to listen to all of the songs...

Thanks for the replies. Yea, I thought about getting the Alpine IVA-W205 or Kenwood DDX-X7100 but the problem I have with aftermarket head units is that they don't look OEM and match. If they illuminated in orange (amber) like Nacamichi or Becker then I'd consider it. I think my best option for now is to just have hard wired FM Modulation so I can use my iPod. Not the best solution I know but I am a stickler with OEM looks. I hate having some back lighting on my instruments orange, then blue stereo etc.

porschenut- now that is a good mod indeed for those who really wish to keep the OEM look going.

Me, well, I certainly don't regret the Kenwood DNX7100 upgrade- blue button lights and all .. LOL

I need to look at that Mod more in detail.

I know the DNX-7100 is an awesome head unit, but yea I am too a*nl about having anything else but orange (amber) illumination.

yeah I'm actrually looking at modding the 7100 buttons with amber lighting. If I come up with a method that is reasonable I'll post a DIY.

...or, there is always this route:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsc...24996902QQrdZ1

and
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsc...26095969QQrdZ1

Plus it is possible to get a few extra led's for the window switches and engine / hood switches..
Looks like about a 5-6 hour DIY for all pieces.

I didn't know you could change the LED's like that. That would surely match an Alpine. A high end audio shop here in Bellevue, WA did tell me over the phone that changing the display color on the after market head units is possible, but I have yet to see it. If you figure it out please let us know. I prefer the amber as well but it is nice to have the super white (blue) option.

I guess I have my solution to aftermarket head units. I just looked at a Pioneer AVIC-D3 or something like that, and you can adjust the display color precisely as you want it. So I adjusted it to be prefectly like the OEM amber. I think I'm going that route.
