Man, did I have a close one yesterday. I was cruising home from work (not my usual route) and was listening to the stereo. I thought to myself....man...I wonder if I'll be able to hear the V1 of it goes off? So I turned the V1 volume up. As I was doing that, it started beeping 'laser' at me. I immediately hit the brakes because it was such a strong signal. As I looked down the road, I could see the cop on the side of the road. I drove by real slow and he actually put his hands out the window and clapped! He started to pull out, and I thought he got me....but he pulled over some other poor soul.

That would have sucked since I just got my first speeding ticket in 15 years about a month ago. 2 in a row would have blown.

The V1 I just bought may have just paid for itself.

 

If you got hit with laser, it's an imediate on situation. You are already toast from what I have heard. I think you really got lucky in that he pulled someone else over. You lucky bum!

 

close call, unfortunately i wasn't as lucky on the PCH, damn lasers can get you before you can even see these guys. the moto cop was literally a spec on my windshield. as i drove up to him he put his gloves on extra slow just to be cocky. like John ****en Wayne or something. i guess this will be the first time i go to traffic school. anyhow glad to hear you got away.

Frequently when the cop gets a high laser speed he will quickly take a second, confirming reading. You may have slowed enough the second time he lasered you.

 

Laser is as "immediate" as Radar, since they both travel at the speed of light. Instant-on radar or Laser fired by the officer when a car is within lock-on range (speed reading range), in a single car encounter, will produce equally "immediate" busts on the car.

An advantage of Laser is it's ability to single out a car in a multi-car encounter; something radar can't do.

Also, an Officer who is proficient (and why wouldn't they be, they practice on us enough) will aim closely enough that (1) the chance of the car's laser detector alarming is very low because the beam width of the laser is so narrow, and (2) cars following the targeted car won't receive enough (or any) signal to alarm that a car ahead has been hit.

Except in rare cases, if your V1 laser alarms, you're the target, and he has your speed.

I know he got me. He was either just letting me go because I made an honest attempt to slow down, or he was lazy with the reading or something. Maybe the gun was counting down too quickly....or maybe my smoking Brembos clouded his vision.

BTW.....for my previous ticket last month, there's no online traffic school offered in my area (maybe all of Orange County). That sux. Got a May 1st all-day school on my schedule now

 

And Laser has a range of up to 4500 feet with precision, while radar can read vehicles up to 5500 feet but can only be used in a court of law until about 3000 feet depending and the situations. i.e. straight road, how many cars etc. etc. unlike laser because of pin point accuracy.

 

Does the V1 laser warning ever give false alarms? My V1 laser warning has only sounded a few times but I could never locate the cop anywhere. On a couple of occasions it's gone off multiple times on one short stretch but I could still not locate any cops.

 

Laser's ability to "nail" you is highly dependent on the reflective surfaces on the front of your vehicle. A large semi with a vertical chrome grill is an easy target far off. Anything of a dark colour and especially with a "sloping" front (and especially recessed headlights) is not very reflective to light. Therefore in a 911, especially without a license plate, you are probably not a very easy target; the cop would have to hold the laser on you for a while to get a bounce back to him. I remember an article in some car journal several years back, when laser first came out, that a black corvette with recessed headlights could remain stealth to laser to within a couple hundred feet, and in some cases was not clockable at all.

If the cop is targetting a vehicle in front of you with lots of glass, you may receive a warning "through" that vehicle.

In general though if your radar detector shows laser hitting you, you are the target, and you hope that either the physics of light and your vehicle are on your side, or your "laser diffuser" is working.

 

my V1 brap all the time on 101, especially near flyover or call box, I guess those generate different bands of radars. Talk about being lucky, I got pulled over for doing a 100mph on a 45mph zone near my house 2 days ago late at night ( I thought nobody was around). This cop jumped out of nowhere all of sudden when I was caught. I was really shaky when he approached.
"just got back from work, sir?"
"yes,sir"
"you know why I pull you over"
"yes, i am really sorry sir"
"people speed on the freeway but they don't speed in their neighbourhood, okay?!"
"okay sir, I am very sorry"

could you believe it?! I guess I was just freaking lucky!

Officers in Georgia are taught to target the headlight...very reflective and well below any detector located inside the car. The Officers here are very shots.

 

my V1 gets false alarms from the brake lights of GM trucks, specifically 2003 and 2004 trailblazers, envoys, and others. when they are in front of me at a light, and step on the brake, their brake lights my my laser go nuts till they letup the brake. it also happes on my wifes old passport 4500.
