[quote=drifter12;2178282]I was in the market for a 996 for a while.. you definitely want to get the newest model year you can (mk2 i.e. 2002+ if possible).

Agreed. The 2002 & above has the 3.6, which makes 320 HP & the rear main seal issues that seam to plauge many 3.4s dont seem to be as common.

Thanks, that's good to know. I know some people with 2001 or less and they all have Main Seal Issues. So the 2002 up has the 3.6 and no seal issues?

Those items as well as the bigger engine were all introduced on the 2002 model.

Also figure in a possible extended warranty contract and more expensive than usual service costs if using the dealer.
i never have understood that, buy the newest one you can afford, because all of the newer porsches are (water cooled) not REAL porsches, why do most of the real porsche die-hards say that, at least they think they are the REAL porsche owners.

Without any prejudice as to water or air. Figure out what you can afford to spend (deduct $5,000) and get the latest model with the lowest miles that suits you(Coupe, Cabrolet, S4, etc.). Just remember, I recommended that you deduct the $5,000 because you are going to overspend by $10,000. LOL!!!

If you have 30-35K to spend you are going to end up with a great car. Be patient. The deal will come along. It took me 6 months to find mine. And just in case you are wondering, I didn't have 30-35K to spend.

The Porsche community is notorious for the hierarchy and bias - get used to it.

Thee 993 people say the water-cooled era marks the end of the true Porsche, but the 356 people don't even acknowledge the 993 crew.

The 997 people sneer at the 996 crowd because of our 'fried egg' headlamps and we look down on the Boxter gang because 'they're not even built in Germany'. (whatever)

I agree with the general consensus - buy the newest car (of your preferred generation!) that you can afford. I have a 03 C2 cab - *love* it and happy I managed to find one within my budget. If you can afford a turbo - do.

As for a good buyers resource online:

fozzy, man i don't think that could have been worded any better, if you really look at what you said, you hit the nail on the head, i didn't really know about the 356 & 993's, but it definitely makes sense, if thats possible, i really love the older wide bodies, but i guess most guys would agree on that, thats what i will probably get next if i get another porsche, i've actually looked at a couple of vipers, don't know if i should have said that or not , but i love a nice car, even if its not necessarily a porsche, i never really realized how some of the porsche owners are porsche or nothing, when i had a vette, i don't really remember anybody saying certain models wasn't a real vette, but like you said if your gonna be in the porsche family, you might as well get used to it.

its worse on these forums.... at a get together or C&C, all that prejudice goes out the window.... and the universe is at peace. Porsche owners are a great bunch.

^The Porsche community *is* a great bunch and our internal rivalries are strictly within the family (watch how quickly a P-car owner will step up to help another, irrespective of model) - but that said, I did get some good-natured ribbing at my first PCA event (a lot of 993 owners in our group).

They were kidding, but they weren't joking.
