996 buyers guide?

Hey guys,

My brother is considering buying his first Porsche 911. He's on a budget that I think will keep him in the 996 domain. With that said what would you suggest for a "buying guide" for the 996? Are there any publications or websites that might help?

Thanks in advance...

Matt

Check out Total 911 and GT Porsche. They both have had 996 buyers guides in the past. There British publications but the info should be the same. Also 911 and Porsche world may have good info. They may not be in the current issue but check out the back issues. You can buy all 3 usually from Barnes and Noble. Good Luck!

The current issue...of EXCELLENCE has exactly what you are looking for. It is the market update on both 996s and Boxsters. What the years are and problems to look for and national average pricing.

go pick it up...it is the one on the newsstands now. Perfect timing...read it and go shopping!

I bought the "911secrets" buying guide online, and used that when I bought my car.

I can't remember how much I paid for it, $30 with change.
It's a good guide, in general, but nothing too elaborate.
Probably could pass as a good buy for the beginner Pcar buyer,
but if you're experienced with checking out cars already, you most likely already know half the stuff in the guide.

I could "share" it, if you really are interested...

Buy the newest Porsche you can afford. I don't think anyone has gone wrong with that advice.

Also figure in a possible extended warranty contract and more expensive than usual service costs if using the dealer.

I was in the market for a 996 for a while.. you definitely want to get the newest model year you can (mk2 i.e. 2002+ if possible).

besides the references above, i also found the original porsche order guides very handy (to understanding the vast features and associated original pricing that was offered; what your top features by priority level would be). renntech has the order guides since 03 for download here:

http://www.renntech.org/forums/index...ads&showcat=13

here are a couple more tomes i found helpful:
http://www.amazon.com/Porsche-911-Carrera-Turbo-996/dp/095499907X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1229555065&sr=8-1
http://www.amazon.com/Porsche-996-Essential-Companion-Supreme/dp/1845840968/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b

(if you're going 2002, you can still use the 03 as a reference, they'll be close enough)
