Oil Change & Tools

OK...... some quick questions.

1) The drain plug on the 3.6, just a normal 8mm allen? (And I ask because it looks somewhat "stepped" inside.......like an 8mm, then into a smaller size)

2) The washer, should it be replaced?

3) Any idea on the proper torque for the pan nut?

4) Is it safe enough to put in 9qts with no-overfill, or best to go with 8, crank it up to get circulation into the filer, let sit 1hr, check, then add-from-there?

(Even though 6500miles, I'm gonna just do it anyway.......0w-40 M1)

1. I beleive there is an allen wrench that is in the tool pouch that came with the car.
2. yes replace the washer
3 torque?, just a little snug should do it, this isnt rocket science stuf
4 on the 9th qt, watch the dipstick carefully, it is very easy to overfill this car. I cant believe they no longer have dipsticks in the 997

Tx........yea, seems like most of the cars I've had with aluminum oil pan set-ups did have a torque setting. (something in in the low 20's)....

Tool Pants is infamous around these parts
From my failing memory. 18 foot pounds for the oil filter cannister. 37 foot pounds for the drain plug. Allen is 8 mm and is not included in the tool kit.

You are told to replace the aluminum washer for the drain plug. The filter should come with the O-ring for the cannister. I have reused both and my car is still alive.

You need a large capacity drain pan.

If your car is level you will add 9 quarts. Plus or minus. Put in 8.5, start up it. Let it sit like you said. Then check the level and add more oil if needed. It is easier to add than remove oil.

Thanks........(Just need to head out and get a smaller diameter filter-end style removal piece). I'm cool with all the other stuff. (When I got my lift a few years ago, I decided to get a 8gal rolling oil canister at the time).

Finding the 0w-40 was a PIA......... Usually Walmart has M1 at a decent price, Autozone was about $1.25/qt more @ $6.19.

(And when I looked closer inside the plug, its just 8mm then a small round indent at the bottom)

Just as an FYI........... NAPA has their own nice 14-flute/76mm "USA Made" end-cap filter remover for $9 that worked very nicely. (thick composite material, steel insert for 3/8" drive). It also looks like if you let the car with plug & filter out, drain fully, the 8.75qts takes the dash gauge to dead center.

(I typically fill the oil filter canister up to about 3/4 before installation, just to aid in any dry-start potential)

Although super easy stuff for anyone to do.......... there is always a right-way and a wrong-way to do stuff.......
