Trac ON or OFF for track events?
Trac ON or OFF for track events?
I've been to several track events, but this is my first one with my 996C2. Would you all recommend driving with the Traction control ON or OFF? (I don't have PSM)
I don't want to burn out the brakes if the traction control keeps trying to modulate the wheel spin on the track. But then again the 911's tend to lose the back end out, so maybe it's safer to leave it on?
I figure I try both, but I was wondering if some people may have some experience with this.
Thanks

do not use the PSM, leave it off. infact i personally think the car didn't even need it. it should be an option for tiptronic drivers. post next time you are going to a track event, i would like to come with you.
Steve when are you tracking the car? Make sure to get some video next time you go. My opinion would be to leave it on, and see how it goes, if it doesn't kick in with they way you drive, I would assume you'd be fine without it.
I've also got the traction control and no PSM. I've been tracking my car quite a bit the last year. Sometimes I'll enter the track and forget to turn the TC off. Big mistake! The car handles oddly on some sections of the track and is more difficult to drive. By the 2nd lap I'll figure out what's wrong and switch it off every time. It'll kick in during long sweepers and tight turns where you'll hear some tire squeal and cause the car to become jerky (sort of the opposite of what you'd expect to happen).
If you're new to the track or babying the car, you might not notice. Once you've got a few days under your belt and start to push harder, you'll notice the difference right away whether it's on or off.
I'd leave it off all the time on the track. The only exception might be in the wet, but I turn it off even then as I prefer the feedback you get without it on.

Thanks for the advice. On my last car I would always leave it off, as it would interfere so much to the point where the car was undrivable. I'll probably just try it for the first session and then leave it off for the rest of the day.
I got lucky that my friend's boss is renting Buttonwillow the entire day for a private event. My buddy was able to sneak me in. Should be only 40 cars at most, and best of all it's free

Just got back from a full day at Buttonwillow. It was great considering there were only about 30 cars total, and after lunch it dropped down to less than a dozen. (mostly 911's)
My 996 handled more neutral than I had expected a rear engine car to drive. Talk about a free for all... there were no corner workers, 1 instructor, and passing was fair game anywhere. One guy w/ a boxsterS went off into the dirt pretty heavy...let's just say he needs a detail job really bad now.
The TRAC was a big hinderance right off the first lap. You definitely have to turn it off.
