Multi-Function Steering Wheel

Okay, so its been almost 5 months since I got my Turbo. Is it just me, or is the multi-function steering wheel the most worthless option ever?? Is there even an easy way to change the radio station with it or the track on a CD?

It's pretty lame. You need to click to audio, scroll to track selection, then pick a track. The problem...is the buttons and scrolling are done on alternating hands...how un-intuitive is that?

Come in handy for volume control and scrolling through my ipod playlists. Other than that... kinda useless.

BSM is infamous around these parts
I regularly use the left scroll for volume control/mute, and occassionally the right scroll to zoom in/out on the nav map, but otherwise not that intuitive working thru the menus. Used the phone buttons for a few incoming calls, but always forced to look down at the wheel b/c I can never recall which side correct button is on (pick-up vs hang-up), rendering this function both useless and dangerous.

That is why I ordered mine with the thicker sport steeringwheel, in all my cars I very seldom used the "multi-function' anyway

The real question is, when will Porsche wake up and give us a great looking wheel, instead of this crappy mini-vw-round hub crap that they call the sport wheel? It really drives me nuts. The 996 had such a gorgeous wheel in full leather, thick, 3-spoke, and this sport wheel is such shiz. I know others like it, but jeez, it could be significantly improved.

vs this work of art in my C4S Cab:

Here's the multi-function wheel + thicker rim combo of my car (I forget which option codes required)... For me, more than anything about the wheel, the thicker rim was a must-have.

Thicker rim is available on the Sport wheel.... For me, thicker is better too. But neither wheel is much to look at compared to the 996. And the focus of my comment is mostly the overall appeance of the center, which sucks on all the 997 wheel options I've seen, other than some aftermarket units.

I do miss the feel of the inner curve bumps of the rim above the thumb corners of the wheel... I had your exact wheel on my prior C4S and loved it - look and feel.

I have one and other than controlling the volume, which I forget to do half the time, I agree it's a waste of money. I also think the sport wheel is better looking too, except for the gray painted plastic that surrounds the leather circle. I cannot understand why Porsche would not offer this part either painted or leather covered like the "y" trim on the standard wheel.

Eric - do you paint this part?

Not only do we paint the circle around the center, we also paint the rest of the wheel trim. We've done a number of GT3's lately, where we did the center panels/pcm trim, steering wheel hardware, door release levers and nearly everything else in the car (including the a/c vents) in gloss black, pure orange, speed yellow, whatever was requested.

The Black turbo below has our black painted pcm faceplates, black a/c vents, speed yellow shifter trim, black rear console and front section, speed yellow door levers, speed yellow wheel buttons, black airbag surround, etc...

We did a similar package for a GT3 in pure orange/black recently too, pics not yet done on vehicle, these were the parts:

Eric, did you find a solution for the pcm faceplates. I know, that it belongs to the pcm, but perhaps you found a clever way. As i´m outside the US i will not be able to do that in your place ;-(

I hate that ****ty plastic volcano ****** pcm faceplates, and i missed to order it painted.

regards
