Brakes are squealing like a city bus!

I tried to bed the brakes in but no improvement, just before I roll to a stop, the brakes squeal like you would not imagine. I guess I'll just make a game out of it and see how many seconds I can hold the squealing sound before stopping. :D Any suggestions?

Periokid 10-22-2007 06:03 PM

Mine do that too. After driving the car for a while, as I come to a gradual stop, the noise is so bad. I told the dealer when I first got it and they said to give it more time. It still does it but less.

It's a dentist thing I guess, the car knows that we like the high pitched noise that handpieces make. :D On a serious note, it's interesting that you should have the exact same problem. It makes the noise just before the car comes to a stop and I had the same brakes on my 997S but never heard a peep out of them.

slykmr 10-22-2007 07:46 PM

I have had the same problem on mulitple cars. The best thing I find is to go to a self wash facility and use the high pressure wand to really deep clean the calipers. Works every time. Just my .02

mixedmac 10-22-2007 08:30 PM

my gt3 did that as well, oh by the way, i am a dentist too, the brakes sound way better than the high speed.

BSM 10-22-2007 08:40 PM

Same issue here (steel brakes) as well when I brake gently in daily traffic... I'm at 3K miles now. Problem goes away when after standing on the brakes during hard driving, but seems to creep back around after time...

are you crazy? you never....ever...ever put a power washer close to any kind of mechanical parts....power washers can push all the grease out of joints/fitting/hubs/ect......your best bet is to go to the local autoparts store....get brake cleaner....and spray the rotors down....sometimes caked on brake dust can cause a massive amount of noise when you apply the brakes........after you clean them i suggest driving the car normally, and it should eventually go away after the pads have been beaded/ broken in........

2K7997TT 10-22-2007 10:40 PM

My car has 10,000 miles....and stilll squeaking.

I am proud that my Turbo sounds like a '79 Gran Torino.

lob12 10-22-2007 11:20 PM

I have the same exact problem and its very annoying. It sounds like a bus pulling up to a stop sign. My 996 TT never had this problem so I am starting to think from this thread that the 997 TT pads have a problem. I would have expected this from a Ferrari but not a Porsche.

2thfixr 10-23-2007 12:34 AM

Wow this is a surprise! Now I am beginning to think this is a turbo issue, have any of your guys taken your car in for the brakes? I have an appt on Monday.

You think the high speed sounds bad to you, you should be on my end of the high speed. I'm NOT a dentist.http://www.freesmileys.org/emo/chores022.gif

Periokid 10-23-2007 07:52 AM

Yup, worse than a dental drill :)

My 996TT with ceramics never made a peep and were known for noise, go figure.

My 997TT with steels can be so loud coming to a slow stop. People look over at me, like I am in a garbage truck.

atomic80 10-23-2007 11:00 AM

My brakes don't squeal at all and I have ceramics.

TT Gasman 10-23-2007 11:10 AM

Mine did this a little when I first got the car but no more.

Al Norton 10-23-2007 11:15 AM

2thfixr,

I saw no mention on the thread as to what kind of pads you have. What are you running? I have Pagid Oranges that were bedded correctly on old rotors, and rarely have any squeeling noises. I, too, am a dentist. Seems to be a gaggle of us on this thread. We need a peep out of Vincent to round it out.

MrTheKid 10-23-2007 11:39 AM

brembos always squeak, so do stop tech and also baers . .

mine squeak when COLD.... after running them and pusing them... the squeaking should cease!

speedoflight 10-23-2007 11:53 AM

not just TTs. brakes (steel) on some GT3's squeal as well. i have steel brakes. i've bedded it twice. car only have 400mi so far. dealer says to give it some time. other gt3 owners say i'm not driving hard enough (in stop-n-go traffic). hilarious

https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...t=brake+squeal

gradyex 10-23-2007 12:16 PM

Mine do the same (red steelies). I try and keep the dust to a minimum with a high pressure hose (not a power washer) + a wheel brush. Amazing the dust that comes out of these things but I am not complaining because they stop better than anything I have ever driven without fade during brisk driving around the twisties. I thought it was the Ceramics with this problem, looks like its the other way around!

jlee 10-23-2007 12:17 PM

My GT3 used to squeak pretty badly also. After a few sessions of very hard braking, the squeaks disappeared. Can't say this will work for everyone, but it should be worth a try.

E55AMG 10-23-2007 12:50 PM

5,500 miles on my PCCB's and not a peep (i'm sure I just jinxed myself LOL)

WesG 10-23-2007 01:33 PM

I have a 2007 Turbo with a bit over 1,000 miles. The brakes have squealled since the day I drove it home. I does drive me crazy and it is embarrasing. It occurs when I am rolling to a stop. I can make a few high speed panic stops and they will be quiet for a couple of hours. If it is damp outside, they do not squeal. I hope it goes away sometime soon. I have never had a car that the brakes sound like this. If anyone has a fix, I would really like to know.

BSM 10-23-2007 01:57 PM

Any techs here that can pipe in w/ some thoughts/solutions?

I am deaf so no problem here. J/K
My GT3 likes to squeal every now and then. I just slam hard on the brake at 100pmh activating the ABS and smoke all the tires. Works everytimes.

HUMMM 3 10-23-2007 10:02 PM

I wonder if this couldn't be fixed with the goop (don't ask me what kind of goop, but a brake shop guy would know.) that is applied to the back of the brake pad when they're being installed. The squealing noises are usually caused by vibration of the pads, and this can be mitigated with the application of this goop stuff.

BTW I had Brembo's on my M3 and have PCCB's on the turbo and no squealing noises. Certainly if you blast your pads with high pressure water you'll eliminate any "goop" that may have been applied on installation.

Don't know if this helps or makes sense to any of you, but it's my $.02 worth.:)

yes, it's called anti-squeal compound.

Actually it's called anti seize compound.

MKTURBO 10-25-2007 03:26 PM

i dont think its anti sieze.....anti sieze is a silver compound designed to go onto bolt to they dont sieze up, hence the name anti-sieze.......i think that your refering to a compound that goes on the brake pistions to cause less vibration resulting in less noise

OK I blew it. Talked to my brake guy. He says he uses Stalube synthetic grease. If the pads have shims he uses a little dab of a special glue (didn't get the name) on the shim. At any rate, there apparently are several methods of eliminating brake squeal, and most any brake mechanic would know how to fix squealing brakes. No one should have to suffer with that noise.

TT Surgeon 10-25-2007 09:39 PM

Mine squeeled the first 2k miles then stopped right after a track day;)

eclou 10-25-2007 09:43 PM

sometimes the squealing is due to some glazing on the rotors. Usually a higher intensity stop from higher speed will clean off the residue and end the squealing for awhile

yalmutawa 10-26-2007 07:30 AM

dude's me 2 :p it imbaris me specialy when i park after a while of driving and pls tell me is't the same problem with the ceramic break's too ?

Mercedes Benz 10-26-2007 01:09 PM

There is a thread about this in the GT3 forum. MY GT3 with steel brakes squeals so bad it sounds like a freight train coming to a stop that people walking on the other side of an 8 lane road look over. I tried every type of braking, it goes away, but comes right back.

BSM 10-26-2007 04:15 PM

Anyone know if the brake setup for the 997TT's and GT3's is different from previous generation brakes? Had this issue early on w/ my 996 C4S, but it quickly went away. Appears most everyone on this post citing issues is referring the the 997 red steel brakes?

19000rpm 10-26-2007 04:40 PM

Glazing is a contributing factor. The thing that causes the noise as mentioned earlier is the pad jittering back and forth really fast in the caliper, kind of like a reed in a musical instrument. The only real way to get rid of it is to pop the calipers off and clean and re-lubricate the back of the pads. If the rotors are glazed then they need to be resurfaced or replaced along with the pads. Some pad/rotor combinations are more susceptible to this, eg aggressive pads. Hope this helps.
