I'm interested in this as well. To me, the appearance of the 997tt is not significantly different than the the 996, so i wouldn't switch for that alone. For all of those stating there is a "huge" difference between the two cars, please elaborate on what those differences are. Better handling, acceleration, stereo? Thanks

I think going from a 996tt to a 997tt is very much worth it. The interior alone on the 997 is worth making the jump. But maybe I would wait for the update the 997tt is going to have soon witht he taillights, and etc.

My last TT was an 03 X50 6speed. I can tell you that after approx. 8600 miles on my unmodded 997TT (a tip no less) that the newer model is faster and more refined. The 997 is not as loud or raucous as the X50, but it is an amazing daily driver. My 997TT has usable cup holders for my morning Starbucks and the sport seats are ergonomically excellent. It is also a better handler than my X50 and has an excellent fit and finish. I never tracked my 996, or the 997, so I can't opine as to their track characteristics. Finally, within 12-18 months I guarantee you that there will be 800-850 crank hp packages that will be readily available if you are so inclined to mod the 997. Finally, I think whether your 996 is lightly modded should be irrelevant to your decision. Why ? Real TT daily drivers know that you must get some heavy seat time with their vehicles - I mean put serious miles on the car, to extract its true potential. I seriously do not believe that 99.9% of us can extract 100% of what a totally stock 997TT can offer. IMHO, after approx. 10K miles or so of seat time, you can start to substantively mod the performance characteristics of the car (engine, suspension, tranny, etc.). I'm not opposed to wheels, tires and other aesthetic mods, but I really think you'll be duly impressed with the 997. Hey, you can start modding right out of the showroom, but I'd think you would be nuts ! Bottom line, dump the 996 and get the 997 - you will not be sorry. Good luck with your decision.

i still haven't read much of a real reason for switching, aside from cup holders and (arguably) better interior? as for 800-850hp packages, sure, once you open up the engine.

Carendt242,

I think if you can get some real seat time in a new 997TT you'll become a believer. They really are 2 totally different beasts. Plus, IMHO there is more to life than simple zero to whatever times. If you just want "pure performance" with kick *** zero to whatever times I'm sure your GT700 is simply awesome. However, for me, as a daily driver, I've come to appreciate the myriad of refinements in the new TT. Finally, your right about the 800-850 hp and opening the engine. I'm just trying to point out that the 997 will be just as moddable as the 996 (by the top tuners), given adequate time.

Because there isnt much, this is still the evolution of the same car. The interior is one of the best improvements of any car I've ever seen. Other than that its just evolution. You wont get a whole different car.

I have never thought the TT was worth as much as they charge for new ones.

I actually like the exterior of the 996TT more....and if you need add-ons, the GT2 and/or Techart options are quite nice..

The interior of the newer model is better (a la Audi in my opinion....perhaps the same suppliers....you never know...). For some dollars, one can put better seats in, perhaps even 997TT seats, carbon hear and there, an aftermarket audio system (I did..pioneer Avic with iPOD/video/usb/nav/dvd/gps/xm/xmtraffic...), and a really nice FVD/Gert style wheel/shifter/other and be way, way ahead in costs.

The 996 cupholders stink. You can get good ones aftermarket (ultimatecupholders or something like that...).

Just me. 60 k car. 15 k to mod up the wazzoo....550-600hp, and it is 75k...new 997tt...130k+.

My math. Probably off. On the X50 above, k24's without an ecu tune can actually be worse for dd than k16's.... IF money is not an issue....the 997tt is the newer car. For me, I would rather have the 996tt and 55k+ in the bank. I am curious about the 998....v8? m96turbo?

I've owned the last three versions of the Turbo. Don't even hesitate. I think the 993 was better than the 996, but the 997 tops both of them by far.

Isn't the 997TT going to hold it's value better than the 996s due to (relatively) limited production?

How limited will the TT coupe production really be ? Seems like they are making a ****load of them and a big chunk come to the United States. I wouldn't buy a 997TT due to exclusivity (at least over a 996TT). They made very few 996 GT2's and they have still depreciated like crap through a goose. All of these rides are bad investments (even modern Ferrari models depreciate unless bought at MSRP and then they too will eventually depreciate below MSRP). Buy the 997 as its simply a better overall ride than the 996.

I made the switch and don't regret a minute of it. The 997tt is a much better car. IMO. The 993tt, however was a real bad *** ride. They are bringing all the money now in the pre-owned market.
