19" vs 20" Wheels

I'm looking at changing the stock wheels on my 997 TT ( 19" ) to 20" custom wheels. I am concerned about a rougher ride. Is it a valid concern? Has anyone had a negative experience switching to 20"

I myself wouldn't personally put 20's on since they look great, ride fine and handles well.

Rougher ride? Well depending if you are coming from an SUV or Caddy. If you are used to the ride already in the Turbo and I would go out on a limb and say you are then it won't be a noticeable change.

20's will a full face looks larger than 20's with a dish. So be careful of that optical illusion. I have 20's with a lip and it's just perfect IMHO But wheels like the P43 might look a little larger because its a non-lipped wheel but I still think they look nice in 20's.

Go for it!

If a rough ride concerns you, you bought the wrong car. Go with the 20 inch wheels. I agree that a lipped wheel will look smaller than a full face wheel like the HRE p43.

Is your objective street style or track capability?

I'm not worried about track capability but I am concerned about shaking my dentures loose! I think 20" deep dish wheels look very very cool !

Thanks Ben! Your car ain't too shabby either

Ben who is this Atomic Character? I think he needs to be banned!

Jason,

You better have a place for me to crash when I come up to visit. I am bringing the camera gear to take pictures of everything except your car! I wouldn't even waste my disposable kodak 800ISO on that thing!

Sorry back on track. Go for the 20's!

I have a set of P40's silver going on my black turbo next week. I spent quite a bit of time thinking about and researching what wheels and in what size. My motivation was that I didn't like the look of the stock wheels and I wanted to pick up (lose) a little unsprung weight. I fought with my tuners for two weeks on the rim size. Both tuners run race teams and would likely be recognized by many of you. I wanted to go 20" and they both thought (independently) that performance would be much better going down to 18". Ultimately I compromised by staying with the 19". I think Alpine is right if you go with a monoblock, rimless wheel like the HRE P40 it visually looks bigger than stock and maybe as big as a 20" rimmed wheel. Lowering the car helps the look a lot as well, plus there are a lot more tire choices at 19". Just my view

If you click on the HRE banner the black porsche has 20" p40s it looks great! it looks lowered as well , I drive 90% on the street and have 18" for the track and 20"p40s for everyday Ive lowered my car i think it looks great, had too roll my fenders as well

If you dont mind the slight reduction in performance (IMO the ride harshness is not enough to put off swapping) then 20's do look good.

I would never do it FWIW, Im staying with lighter 19's.

The P40's in black in 20's do look great but you have to consider that the black is helping out the Turbo on carrying the look. In silver it would look much larger and might make you reconsider. I am all for 20's with a dish and 19's without a dish when it is a mesh design like a P40.

The weight difference between most 19 and 20 inch wheels of the same kind is negligible. Unless you want serious performance, its just a matter of how you think it looks. I prefer 20" for a good street look. Lowering is a must though.
