VTG reliability

I'm new to this forum and and expecting delivery in July for MY08 in GT Silver. I know the VTG are new, but how is the reliability?; I know from previous experience, the turbo itself has to be rebuild every 50k miles or depending on how much you push it (on other vehicles). How is it on Porsche VTG or previous turbos?

The VTG turbo is brand new, and has never been used on any production car before, so unless you have owned another 997TT, you havent had personal experience. Ive owned numerous turbo vehicles, and had many customers, and turbochargers if taken care of can last over 100k miles. As with anything, they wear out, and the VTG turbo is no different. They will last as long as a normal turbo. Porsche uses KKK turbos, and they have always been plenty reliable.

the 997tt turbos run very hot due to the oe restrictive exhaust system. replace exhaust system with a low restriction unit and you will get longer turbo life, in addition to less turbo lag and more performance.

VTG turbochargers have been around for a while, primarily on turbocharged diesel engines. Honda had a primitive version of the VTGs in the late 80s, but never produced them in mass quantity for production vehicles. I think there was also a Dodge Shadow in limited production with the VTG turbos.

I should have been more specific. These turbos arent new, but to production cars, they are.

It's definately a first for gasoline engines.

The current Porsche turbochargers are manufactured by Borg Warner

Yes,

And Borg Warner bought KKK after they merged with Schwitzer.
