I want your Turbo...
I want your Turbo...
So, how do I deal with this situation? I am in the market for a used 997 Turbo to replace my 996 C4S. I happen across the perfectly optioned 997 Turbo in a local public garage one day and haven’t seen the car since. However, I did write down the VIN (I felt a bit cheesy doing this, mind you).
I want to contact the owner of this car and let him know I would be interested in making an offer on the car (or taking over the lease just before it expires), so that I have a chance to bid on it before it goes into the pool when traded in (which, as it was explained to me, would mean it could end up anywhere in the US and potentially much harder to find). I know the car is leased because I had the VIN checked (which again made me feel a bit cheesy) but, of course, no personal information was ever provided to me.
So…how do I track this owner down without coming off as some kind of stalker? I would just leave a note on the car if I saw it again….but that doesn’t appear to be an option. I don’t think the dealership would want to assist in passing a message along which leaves the option of trying to russell up the owner over a forum.
What’s the etiquette on this? Posting the VIN seems like a violation of some unwritten rule and describing the location of the car, etc. might **** someone off.

Why don't you post the color, options, and some info about the car. The owner might be a member here. Otherwise, someone in your area might spot the car.
You could also do a DMV records search like Gone in Sixty Seconds.

Why not find oout what dealer sold it and then ask them to play intermediary and call the owner/lessor and tell them that you are interested. Dealer wouldn't have to provide you any personal info so confidentiality could be maintained. What's in it for the dealer? Well, you could offer them a $1000 bird-dog fee or perhaps they sell you an extended warranty or something at time of trade.
Not sure about the dealer approach - will check but this dealer is a bit touchy with that kind of stuff (the $1k fee might change their mind).
As to details, the car was purchased in March 2007 in CT, Basalt Black, Tiptronic, with Yellow stitching literally everywhere (along with Yellow dials and the PCCB brakes) and tons of options. Gorgeous.
Maybe that will help ferret out the owner.
As to those who have IM'd me with their cars for sale, I cant respond since I dont have enough posts yet. Will try to fix that now.

I agree with LSM, why not find a car thats FOR SALE ? there has got to be one available somewhere. why play detective? maybe the owner is going to buy it out or re lease to lower his/her payments.

Would have to venture a guess your chances of finding the owner and his willingness to sell would be awfully low. So rather than go Single White Female on the poor guy check out the classifieds or bite the bullet and order new with the specs your after! Good luck either way.
