Help Pls: What Do You Use for Exter. Spot Cleaner?
Barrister,
Wow, thanks for taking the time to post all the URL's. I have Meguiars Scratch X and didn't think to use it because it is a polisher & scratch remover and as such I thought I shouldn't use it that often since it works by thinning the top layer? Your thoughts? TIA.

You should look in the detailing section of the forum. There is a guy that frequents it named Moe Mistry. His is a pro detailer here in OC. He has a lot of knowledge and seems like a straight shooter.
Every few days my fairly light color car (red) would accumulate these multiple little black dots, about 1 mm or so in diameter, around the exhaust area and behind front wheels. I would assume it's either oil or tar. I use P21S Total Auto Wash which works great but does require a lot of back and forth scrubbing. I also used Turtle Wax Bug & Tar Remover but that doesn't work nearly as well. Any recommendation please? Thanks in advance.
Ah, you are THE MoeMistry I've been hearing about! Thanks for sharing your knowledge; per Barrister's (or someone) suggestion, I actually have been reading some of your (excellent) posts in the detail forum.
I suspect, besides tar as you mentioned, these dots could possibly also be exhaust soot or residual oil picked up from street. They are about 1-3mm in diameter, seen in the back of the car around exhaust area and lower parts of car behind front wheels. (I suspect I am not the only light color Turbo owners who observe this, so your answers ARE being watched.
) Whatever they are, here is what I've done and would really appreciate your inputs.
1. P21S Auto Wash: Not good. I have to scrub back and forth many times.
2. 3M Adhesive Remover (Contents: vm&p naphtha, xylene, ethylbenzene and propane): Works like magic. The black spot come off easily and immediately.
3. Mineral Spirits: I was about to try this next. Expect same result as 2 since I've seen both of these in the paint section of Home Depot.
4. Meguiars Scratch X: Also works, the most powerful but requires a little more scrubbing than the 3M Adhesive Remover.
Given what I've found and how often these dots appear, I was thinking the easiest solution would seem to be either 2 or 3 above, and then 4 for the tough ones.
1. Your thoughts?
2. No harm done in the long run with mineral spirits or 3M Adhesive Remover?? Should I be concerned about all the scary sounding hydrocarbon ring compounds in the 3M Adhesive Remover?
3. Does Zymol HD-Cleanse work on the same principle as Meguiars Scratch X? Do you prefer one over the other?

If this is a routine problem, then it just may be the route you take. Are there new construction, new paved roads, etc. To safely remove these spots, which I assume is probably tar or asphalt, you can simply clay. Then you would polish and wax. A good polish, if you didn't want to clay, that would safely and gently remove the tar spots is Zymol HD-Cleanse. You would then follow it with a wax. Hope this helps. You may also want to post some pictures here. But it sounds like it's coming from the route you drive and this would be the simplest remedy.
