Ouch . I do empathize for your pain .

The logic behind the less frequent use aims at reducing the risk but not eliminating it and thus enhance enjoyment via preservation .

1) When I do drive it --it not only feels "new" , it is new mechanically speaking.

2) There is a certain level of enjoyment by knowing the car is safer in the garage than exposed to multiple risks . IE --the end parking spot voiced by others =less risk .

3) It depreciates less = enjoyment = positive sentiment .

4) A ding or dent would diminish my enjoyment with the car for me . In the past with my daily driving Porsches and my innocence of wanting to drive it everywhere I also "always knew it was there" when damage was repaired . The tiniest little scratch --I can recall . It detracted from the miles that I did drive .

So my overprotectiveness with this car is my way to trying to maximize the quality of each driving moment and minimize the negative as best as I could .

Question 2thfixer -- Is there any place you would NOT drive your car ? and why?

The only place I will not or should I say can not drive my car is my parent's house. They have a circular driveway with a very steep entry/exit and brick planters on either side. It's a straight shoot with no way to angle so I already ruined one lip.... I can't afford to pay for 1 lip every time I visit.

For instance today I chose NOT to drive my car because I went to a place where valet parking is the only option . I also considered Friday commuter traffic and opted to leave the car home . The idea of going to a supermarket is competely out with this car . I read a post of a guy placing cake in his rear fold seat --for me --no food in my car --ever.

I wasn't this protective with my 997S . I wasn't even this pampering when the car was stock . After I modded it I saw the enormous amount of work and care that went into making this car the way it is .

On a beautiful Sunday --I'll drive it . If I am free on weekday afternoon when congestion is less , I'll drive it as a special treat. In fact I prefer daylight driving with the car .

Anyone else like this ? If so what lengths have you gone to avoid a ding or scratch ?

As well if anyone drives the car as a "beater" please chime in . How can you face leaving the car at the movies and still enjoy the film knowing the car is sitting in parking lot ?
i agree completely as i drive mine about the same amount and times of day relative to weather conditions unless caught in rain.even with my awe stage 2 mods i get too used to the power almost instantly and want more,so i drive it less to prevent further spending of $$$ to get more power which i ultimately end up again wanting more.a couple of days a week driving it and it is a treat and i am satisfied as the car always feels fast as opposed to driving it daily and it feeling slower which in turn would cause me to expend more $$$ to get that same feeling as i have now.either way i am spending money to drive it more often and rack up additional miles which reduces value or driving it less and getting higher resale value at the expense of the $$$ spent on mods to keep me from getting bored once again as i always do!

All this protectiveness is truely OTT,i drive my car everywhere as much as i can,i have a clear bra on it but will not install another one as they are a waste of time,i much rather repaint the front and what ever else is needed once in a while.
Valet parking is a sensitive subject, usually won't let them burn the clutch of my car so self park, with a few rare exceptions at places i know.

These 997Ts are meant to be driven hard and daily as per bulid quality and durability, excellent visibility comfort/space and avilabilty of power unlike other cars of similar performance,so imo is just go for it and enjoy them without any hang ups, that's the whole point of it.

Everyone here knows the feeling. When something "happens" its kind of like your car is no longer a virgin anymore, you just don't have quite the same feeling. I once traded a vehicle the next week after a friend of mine spilled a coke down the side of the console.

I drive mine as much as possible, including occassional track use and road trips. Porsches are meant to be driven. Having said that I don't do anything stupid like driving in sleezy areas or park in wal mart. Drive the car don't save it for the next guy.

Yes money is money and we can always make more, but putting the money aside, i think what he is talking about is the emontional investment, time and passion that is involved when creating a unique car taylored to his exact needs. I dont think this kind of behavior is only a result of the monetary value of the vehicle, but also it can be result of an emotional investment. Most porsche owners are financially responsible individuals that understand that these are toys.

I try to protect it as much as I can but if something bad is gunna happen no way in hell are you gunna stop it from happening.

I was at Publix(very rare to drive it to the shops) buying some beer. And came back to my car and saw a midlle aged woman(MILF) trying to aim her shopping cart to the pack of other carts in the cage. And she let it go, hint hint my Porsche is 1 parking space away from where she is trying to aim for. Cart hits a sharp right hander going str8 for my Porsche. Im like OMG!!! and tried to run to stop it.(im like 100ft away cant run too fast with 2 6packs of Bud..lol) A random guy turns around and grabs the cart with inches to spair. I offered the guy a 6 pack but he was like no thanks. Im like please take 1. He's like no thanks brah I got to go to the beach waves are nice and got into his Wrangler with like 2 surfboards in it.

Reminds me of the time I was in a grocery store lot, I see this old guy giving his empty cart a shove as he climbs into his pos. Of course the cart is rolling towards a new BMW 5 series, I manage to run over and stop it in time. What an A-hole.

You are probably correct, but I guess that after you stuff 4-5 dragboats that you but your blood, sweat and tears into, and turn them into small fiberglass bits, the car that you can just go out and buy again does not seem so important to me.
Maybe i'm just getting old but I can't get to worked up over a DD. Yes it's a beautiful car, but like any modern car you buy, drop it off at your tuner with a list, write check, pick car up, done.
But I really do see your point.

I bought a throw away car for $16,000 just for Publix and Winn Dixie and Walmart..

My Toyota Matrix is the town car and it saves me a lot of stress. You should see the doors on this car.

It has been banged by shopping carts, doors all dinged, bumpers torn up, etc and the car is 2 years old and has 8,000 miles.

This could be the twin turbo if I took it to the same lots as I do the matrix.

I respect the TT and would never park in those types of lots for fear of accidential damage and acts of vandalism. No one would key the Toyota at least or hyjack it, think it has 128 HP and 0 to 60 is 11 seconds! Its a joke but a reliable car.

Don

I drive it every chance I get in and around NYC. With one life to live and daily reliability, it's a no-brainer.

Sure, the car can be used as a daily driver, but to row yourself through 5 MPH rush hour traffic, racking up useless miles isn't my idea of enjoying such a car. I'd rather pile on the miles doing some fun trips through the twisty roads in the western states.

I have another car with an autobox for a grocery getter and door ding collector.
