no, im planning on getting a 997TT soon, but i want it to be my daily driver. ive been lurking here and on rennlist trying to learn more about these cars.
this is the 3rd or 4th new car that has had problems that i have read so far in the past few months. i cant have a brand new >$100K car breaking down at less than 10K miles. thats unacceptable. im just trying to find out how common problems are on the 997s, and what problems are common. thats all.

thanks for the smart-alleck comments though. u guys are pretty defensive.

 

3 or 4 new cars is not very many at all. With all cars it can be the luck of the draw, there are always going to be defects in some parts. Just hope that if you get a defective part that its not a major part or one that is hard to get. This is what warranty is for.

Well, I guess you're better off with a yellow CEL as opposed to a red flashing one.

 

It is not that we are defensive but someone who is purchasing a 110K+ car should also know that you are sampling a small amount of data you see on this forum and then questioning the reliability of the very car you are wanting to purchase.There are many cars much more expensive than our beloved Turbo's that break down and cost about 5 times as much to fix. So the more you spend doesn't account for much when you go over 100K+

 

So the verdict is in:
Misfiring cylinders and ignition coil.

Should be replaced today hopefully, and tested tomorrow, so there is a small chance I'll have it back for the weekend which would be very nice.

I agree - you're more than likely to find negative comments posted on any automotive board. People like and need a forum in which to share their concerns and frustrations. People usually don't go out of their way to vent about good things. Don't depend on forums to come to any conclusions on quality for any auto.

 

Judging by the lack of "problem" comments on Rennlist, 6speed, Rennteam - which basically samples the most of North America, the UK, Europe and the Middle East, I would say that the 997tt is pretty much trouble free. There simply have not been any "me too" threads of failures. Compare that to the dozens who are on their 2nd and 3rd RMS leaks in their 997GT3/RS's....

 

Before I ordered my car last fall I lurked on here, Rennlist and Rennteam and I was amazed at the lack of problems I saw posted. Knowing how I am and most of the people like me who are hanging out on these forums, things seem to get magnified. With that being said, I am still amazed at the lack of issues and the smile factor which I still get after 4 months of ownership.

 

I think others addressed your reliability question. I'm surprised with this quote. I would guess that Porsche owners drive their cars harder and more often than any other car in its class. Sure, there are plenty of garage queens. These are typically not someone's only car. Not the most practical of vehicles. But look around. Porsche drivers definitely use their cars. Attend a PCA event or any other track event and then tell me they don't stress their cars.

These cars are meant to be driven, and most of us are doing so with remarkably few issues. That said, nothing's perfect.

 

i understand that there will be problems, not all cars are made perfect. and yes forums do magnify problems.
i was at a track event recently with a 996TT friend and his car developed a nasty engine knock on day 2. at 40K miles. meticulously maintained. this is a garage queen/track car. he is looking at engine rebuild. i mean this is a porsche. i realize its one vehicle but when it happens right in front of u, u have to ask the question.
case in point of the OP...im not talking about the stereo not working right or brakes squeaking...im talking about failures that result in brand new cars having to be towed to the dealer. just not used to seeing that on other car forums. im not saying any car is perfect, but for $130K it better be dam close.

 

You've obviously not spent much time reading about BMW's and Merc's then.

nzk - care to elaborate on a track/garage queen's knocking problem which you are saying resulted in an engine rebuild. So I guess your friend is a pro driver who doesn't mis-shift or have problems with his car. You are once again sampling "one" persons car that has an alleged engine failure from a knock. Which I assume you were listening to while at the track? If it was knocking why was your friend still driving it and did it result in an engine rebuild?

I can only speak for myself and say that you need to look at another car if you cannot understand that these cars are meant to be driven, will have some issues(no matter the price) and will require it to be maintained. But the reward will outweight the issues for MOST of the owners. There will be some that will have a horrible experience. It happens. The most reliable cars are sub 40K so if you want to play in that area you have many choices but you are just not going to get you the thrill of a track day or a short blast down the highway and around the bend like a porsche can deliver.

P.S. I don't drink the Porsche Kool-Aid. I just enjoy the cars. Still a high fan of the E46 and E39 M's as well : )

Merc's resale worse than volvo I think. BMW's ( I have owned several ) has been great but I have lots of people I knw who had nothing but issues. But I still bought a few anyways. : )
