I have been reading these posts for quite some time and feel motivated to chime in. I own both a 2008 997tt cab and a 2008 G37. They are totally different, I use them for completely different purposes. When I drive the G37 it is a nice car, but I just cant wait to get behind the wheel of the 997tt. The Porsche gets the adrenalin rushing and just feels like a sports car should. I never looked at it as a price point. Just my two cents!

But just to humor you . . . Sure, the Z06 and the Shelby Mustangs get more than 500 hp - but from a 7.2 liter (Z06) and 5.4 liter (Shelby) engine and at nearly 4,000 lbs each!!! I won't even address the obsurdity of bringing up the Pontiac and the Infinity . . . The 997TT gets 480 hp from a 3.6 liter engine at under 3200 lbs! Can you imagine the difference in acceleration and handling without all of that mass to lug around?!? You can inflate hp numbers with larger and larger engine blocks all day long just to reach the magical 500 hp plateau. But then you aren't driving anymore - you are sailing a yacht on land. 500 horses may look nice on paper. But it is all about weight/displacement to power ratios and efficiency in the real motoring world. Why do you think Formula 1 engines are, at most, 2.5 liters?? Bigger is not always better my friend - even if it means a few more meaningless horses to drag your overweight pig of a car around. Just dropping 30 lbs of unsprung weight from a performance car can feel like adding 15 hp. Just think of what a 480 hp car at nearly 800 pounds lighter than a 500 hp car feels like! A different world. One you should experience first-hand if you ever get the chance.

I have a modded SLK55 AMG Mercedes with under 500 hp that has crushed so-called 500 hp monsters because it only weighs 2,900 freaking pounds. The proof is in the pudding when you actually drive these cars.

I'm not trying to be rude, but your posts are just ridiculous. Both this one and the prior post about rationalizing a 997TT make you look like a total POSER. Either you are just not that smart or your research sucks. It could be a combination of both. Either way, you really need to be told how ridiculous you sound.

That's IMHO as well.
Your weights are way off. The only thing you were close on was the Shelby GT500.

The z06 weighs less than the 911 turbo, so not sure where you got that from.

It would be nice if the 997 turbo was under 3200 pounds, but it isn't.

How exactly did you get an SLK55 to 2900 pounds? Is the roof gone?

Let's take it a step further - scan the magazine rack a little more and you will find lots of turbo econobox and junk yard build-up headlines "12 second Junkyard build 5000.00, etc" - 25 years ago, I spent 30,000.00 raising the hp of a 1971 Trans-am from 250-650, overdrive transmission, four wheel disc brakes, direct-port Nitrous Oxide, etc. Meanwhile, my father had a 152 SAE net hp 1976 911S that I enjoyed driving 10 times more......

ok Barrister,
Not sure what a poser is.
I assume it means that I don't own a 997TT like say I do.
I may not know too much about cars or 911's but I can assure you that I have been driving one just about every day since June of 2005.
No need to be rude here.

I stand corrected on the Z06 weight - 3180 lbs. I meant to cite 4,000 lbs for the GT500 only. But the displacement/power ratio for the Z06 is still poor when compared to the 997TT.

It depends on your perspective, as it can be argued several ways.

The power under the curve is very impressive and it is naturally aspirated. Not to mention it gets VERY fast with small upgrades and it can be said that it has a more efficient drivetrain being RWD.

The GT500 as well has plenty of headroom. If they wanted to produce more hp per liter they easily could, look at the super snake.

Eventually displacement becomes a limiting factor, especially in the 997 turbos case with off boost power. Compaing forced induction to naturally aspirated motors does not make sense.

didn't see this post

The 997TT does need those TT's though to match the Z06's #'s. While it isn't direct displacement, it puts the 3.6 and the 7.0 on a very even playing field. Adding the Twin Turbos at the boost it's running, is essentially doubling the displacement. If you want to do a fair comparison, compare the Z06 motor to the 3.6 of the GT3....the GT3 motor is impressive for a small NA motor. Comparing a boost motor to a non one in a Power/Displacement race really does not make sense.

....
I'm very curious how you got your SLK 55 to 2900 lbs. Everything i've read says they are about 3400 lbs (500lbs is VERY VERY VERY HARD to remove short of gutting EVERYTHING out). ANd i've seen yours...and I know lambo door brackets aren't light (and heavier then stock brackets)

You skipped a few cars but the larger issue is the focus on HP rather than the overall package. The focus on price above quality is another thing droned into your argument .
Lets face it one can take an old Honda and throw a few grand into it and make a fast car .

See for yourself ..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBWK-...eature=related

Does that mean that this old Civic is better than the 35K Infiniti ?
After all if you really want fast at a cheap price why even buy a car ? One can buy a motorcycle and go fast for less . Of course the rain or the absence of airbags come with the territory but would that matter to you if the ONLY criteria is price and straight line speed?

Porsche in general is getting it's *** kicked.
Have you seen the new cars coming out?

Come on!! Especially on the Flag ship turbos! Once you start talking 120-150k for a sports car, you might as well slam on some options/mods from the factory that can get the car at least above 500hp??? Better with mods that can get 750hp!!! then **** ya, I would not think twice about buying the car for 175K!

Piddling in the sub-500hp range for sports cars >80k is pretty sad. I did it because it was not all about the power for me. But, my argument is more about Porsche keeping up with the industry. I still love Porsches and I will continue to be a loyal customer. What I expect in return is an effort on Porsches part to "show me the Horses!!!!" God knows we have all been "Showing them the Money" for many years!!!

Sorry, buy an M3? is not a 911 and it will never be.

Your posts read like some menopausal women wrote them. You are a woman aren't you?
