Bottom Line...
I'm very curious how you got your SLK 55 to 2900 lbs. Everything i've read says they are about 3400 lbs (500lbs is VERY VERY VERY HARD to remove short of gutting EVERYTHING out). ANd i've seen yours...and I know lambo door brackets aren't light (and heavier then stock brackets)
invid,
Relax already. Just posting thoughts that run through many porsche owners minds (maybe not yours). When you stand by the magazine stands, and read the front page articles on Motor Trend and Car and Driver, these are the articles.
Rationalizing the 997TT is a separate issue. It has nothing to do with buying 5 cheaper cars. It has to do with the feeling of owning one. The strange but great feeling. Sometimes surreal. That's all. Keep it light...
Again, my point is (and you can't argue this), "We would all love to see Porsche come out with more horse power!!" We pay for performance and horsepower is part of performance.

If it were about horsepower, then you might as well get a toyota CRX tune it up and it would even cost u half what the pontiac does (theres one for the price of ur pontiac).
in the established sports car industry it no longer is (and never was) about HP/$, as the customers of such brands (porsche, ferrari, lambo, astons, other exotics) buy such cars not merely of how much it costs to get from 0-60 or what would be the better bargain for hp, however they look at something more than that (heritage, engineering, excitement, handling, prestige). other brands such as the pontiac and fords cant compete for such customers, so they try to lure people like u through cheap HP.
About the sub-500 HP on a TT... if that were the case then i dont see ur 500+ ford doing what the TT can acheive with less ?... nor can u ever compare it with an F430 (sub-500hp) or ANY aston martin.
so if ur here to bash porsche's then at least base your arguments on something solid, and not comparing apples and oranges (both are fruit but diff. nature). if your convinced with ur arguments then y get a porsche in the 1st place ? buying the pontiac instead would of saved u the worries.
This is all an insecurity thing. Anyone who cares which car is faster in a straight line needs to goto therapy or drink some herbal tea and relax. The only true measure of a car is on the track, because thats where every little nut and bolt gets stress tested and Porsche outshines tons of cars there. Not just the high HP monsters but also some of the exotics, and usually at half the price.
The focus should be on being a better driver, not on HP and straight lines.

2,900 LBS? What?! The Brabus roll bars drop some weight but as others have noted, not 500 lbs (especially with those HEAVY Brabus rims & door hinges). Not only were your WAY off on the Z06 weight, your SLK weighs in at least 3,300 lbs+ (not to mention you are a somewhat heavyset individual which ain't helping the curb weight factor
). 2,900 lbs...not a snowball's chance in Hades.

997ttt - Are you not happy with your turbo? If you aren't, then sell it get something else. if you are then just enjoy it and don't worry about other cars out there. key thing is to get what you want and what you will enjoy.
The new Enzo replacement is going to be around 700hp. Ferrari doesn't want to compete with Bugatti, Mercedes for the HP title. Instead they're going to focus on light weight and technology. Coming from Ferrari, I think it's the right way to do things. At some point, you can't compete with each other for 2000 plus HP.
I have been reading these posts and these comparisons are ridiculous. I have been fortunate enough to own many cars. I have had Mercedes 01 E430, 06 CLS500 , 03 CL55 493hp supercharged, BMW 325, 02 745, 05 645, and 06 M6. Also 05 Porsche 996tt and 06 Bentley GT. I have had many new Range Rovers (wifes car) current one is supercharged and my 4th one in a row. Currently I have an 08 997tt which i just got and an 07 Bentley GT. I have bought my son a 05 mustang when they first came out (what a pile) and currently I bought him an Audi S4. Before my current purchase of the Porsche TT I test drove a bunch of cars Aston, Ferrari, took home for 2 weekends Lambo Gallardo Spyder. I even drove a Corvette seems like a good car for the money but it really suits my dad better. I looked at some of the other high HP American cars just to see what they were like and see if I was missing something. In my opinion as I always remembered weak internal build quality I could only imagine what mechanical stress would do to those if the internals were so poor what are the mechanicals like but honestly I don't know. The bottom line of all this rambling to me was that the only car I missed of all my cars was my Porsche. I don't claim to be any great driver but my new car seems unbelievable to me even as stock since all I really have done at this point was rims I'm trying to figure out what else I want to do. I agree with all the posts that high HP doesn't seem to be the best measurement. When considering the other cars, the Porsche TT in my opinion should be compared to which I think the high end exotics this car has them beat on what you get for the price. This is by far my longest post but I will say that Porsche has won me for life. Whenever someone asks me how I like my car I just say you need to experience it words cant describe. All those other cars can keep their HP I think Porsche has done a great job!!!
I figure for $150k I'm getting 60 years of sports car and racing experience and countless hours of R&D that can all be traced unbroken back to the original concept. And it's all available and distilled down into one unbelievable package that I can drive and enjoy every day. I'm not even sure how you can put a price on that. If you stop for one brief second and think about being able to buy a little piece of that heritage, it's really money well spent. I would argue that Porsche has more than kept up with the industry. In countless ways it has led it from way in the front. $/HP don't mean dick.
No class at all. Hey you could also get a house in idaho with 5000 square feet for 200k, and a house in newport with 3000 SF and pay 7 million. You gotta wonder about people that ask these kinds of questions..
I suspect that's about as close as you have ever gotten to an actual 997TT - the magazine rack. I don't beleive for a second that you actually own one.
But just to humor you . . . Sure, the Z06 and the Shelby Mustangs get more than 500 hp - but from a 7.2 liter (Z06) and 5.4 liter (Shelby) engine and at nearly 4,000 lbs each!!! I won't even address the obsurdity of bringing up the Pontiac and the Infinity . . . The 997TT gets 480 hp from a 3.6 liter engine at under 3200 lbs! Can you imagine the difference in acceleration and handling without all of that mass to lug around?!? You can inflate hp numbers with larger and larger engine blocks all day long just to reach the magical 500 hp plateau. But then you aren't driving anymore - you are sailing a yacht on land. 500 horses may look nice on paper. But it is all about weight/displacement to power ratios and efficiency in the real motoring world. Why do you think Formula 1 engines are, at most, 2.5 liters?? Bigger is not always better my friend - even if it means a few more meaningless horses to drag your overweight pig of a car around. Just dropping 30 lbs of unsprung weight from a performance car can feel like adding 15 hp. Just think of what a 480 hp car at nearly 800 pounds lighter than a 500 hp car feels like! A different world. One you should experience first-hand if you ever get the chance.
I have a modded SLK55 AMG Mercedes with under 500 hp that has crushed so-called 500 hp monsters because it only weighs 2,900 freaking pounds. The proof is in the pudding when you actually drive these cars.
I'm not trying to be rude, but your posts are just ridiculous. Both this one and the prior post about rationalizing a 997TT make you look like a total POSER. Either you are just not that smart or your research sucks. It could be a combination of both. Either way, you really need to be told how ridiculous you sound.
That's IMHO as well.

....if its only a Horsepower issue, the turbo platform is made for modding.I just don't see the problem. I couldn't believe the transformation of my 996tt with just flash, exhaust and filter.....try achieving those gains with the other cars you mentioned.
Anyway, 911 is an icon and many buy it irrespective of its relative performance.
