What's wrong with my 997?

Before you read this story, please do not give me any "street racing is gay" or "you're immature" crap. I bought a turbo to drive it, not to baby it around. If I get a ticket, I'm paying for it - not you. It goes on my license - not yours. I wouldn't think this story counted as "street racing" anyway.

I was driving through a mini-canyon today (carbon canyon for the locals on here) and 2 cars behind me I spot a C6 vette (non-Z06) driving agressively the whole time - from beginning to end (16 miles total of windy roads and straights). When the canyon ends, it ends at a traffic light. There are 3 lanes total, a left lane, a lane to go straight and turn right, and the third lane to turn right only. Most of the traffic goes to the right turn only lane which clogs up a bit so I usually go to the middle lane which goes straight AND right. I notice the car behind me goes to the right turn lane only which lets me think the vette would go behind me and sure enough it does.

Anyways, I didn't think much of it since it was a regular C6 vette that appeared bone stock. So I just minded my own business and made the turn cruising to 40mph nicely and smoothly. I see him give some gap before he turns and as soon as I see him turn he comes up aggresively going into the right lane while flooring it - so I decide what the hell. I'm cruising at 40mph, 3rd gear (tiptronic - dont ask ) and downshift to 2nd and floor it. I have the sport chrono package plus so I believe it was overboosting as the sport button was also on. I thought I would walk away from him slowly as he would pass me up but what the hell?!? I don't. He actually still keeps going and before I had to slow down it seemed like I wasn't even going to pull on him and he just kept going.

I know there's a lot of things that may be left out of the story or somethings unclear but just bare with me right now. What do you all think it could have been? Maybe the weather? It was 96 degrees fahrenheit at the time plus my A/C was on - maybe that was it?

All I know is that its time to get an exhaust and flash My car is bone stock right now.

It sounds like he had the jump and enough momentum . Launching at zero or at equal speeds simultaneously is more accurate test as to which car is faster .

His car was likely modified. I have an SLK55 AMG Mercedes that - at first glance - looks stock. But it is actually pusing 450hp with a complete Brabus B55S engine performance kit. It is very quick - especially off the line. I have had a lot of people think they could just smoke me because they thought it was just a stock SLK. They got a pretty rude awakening. The car is a sleeper like that. Also, don't underestimate the power of a C6. It has over 400hp and has a great weight to hp ratio.

My 997TT was also nearly bone stock - only a few cosmetic mods. Then I went on a car run with ELIM and his pals. When I saw his videos from the event, I realized that my car LOOKS great but was not sounding or performing like I wanted it to. Now I have a new exhaust, ecu, pulley, plenum and wheels. I love the additional power and sound. I blame it all on Fred's GT3RS (PETFROG). It got me hooked.

The tough part about cars is that - as with almost anything else - someone will always have something better and faster.

Yeah I sort of decided to give him a "head start" if you will...
I mean if it was a Z06, that's one thing but this was a plain ol C6 vette.

Very true... there ARE sleepers out there so who knows. I miss our SLK55 but I'm sure yours is a whole different car since it's a B55

We gotta meet up sometime I definately gotta check your 997 out. You were just at C&C last weekend with the SLK right?

When your shifting in manual the car shifts slower. I think your better off in full auto mode as shifts are fast and at red-line. Sport mode on which yours was. Have you driven the car much in full auto mode?

I'll try driving it in full auto from now on. I used to drive it on that for awhile but I didn't like how it would cruise in 5th gear all the time... even if I was at 40mph.

Yes its true it dose kick in to 5 when you a cruising. You can always kick it down a gear even in auto mode. However when you step on the gas hard it kicks down from 5 to second very fast. Let us know what you think in full auto mode driving the car very hard. I think you will have a big smile.

It was most likely modded...I was at the local dragway on Tues and there were a LOT of C6 Vettes running low-mid 12's in the quarter. They all looked bone stock, but had superchargers and Turbos amongst other things. I wouldn't let get you down...
By the way, my best was a 11.90 @122mph. I'm fully stock (6 speed) with an Upsolute ECU.
~Cheers.

The driver is also a big part of the equation. Well, I'll just say, that although I have lots of years of experience on the Autobahn and a hard to come by German license, I know for a FACT there are lots of drivers out there better than me!

Thumbs up turn the tables

If you were in the C6 and saw a 997TT the only way you'd go for it was if you knew for sure you actually stood a chance right? With that being said it's how/why the C6 would challenge you. A coworker has a C5 that is as stock on the outside as can be but under the hood over 550 horses. If you saw his car next to you, you'd probably think "don't bug me" but once it unleashes you'd be like what the ****??? Gotta hate those sleepers cause your guard is totally down which leaves them the advantage.
Good story!

Like others said, appearance could be very deceiving. My old C5 Z06 only had black wheels and black outs from the outside, but I was putting down 540rwhp. Surprised a few TTs.

New C6 with the 430hp motor is fast. Also lighter than TT by probably 400lbs so power to weight may not be much different. Oh, forgot to mention, street racing is dumb.
