Does anybody prefer the 997 Turbo for tracking?

This is the reason I ask. I have been tracking my 600HP 996 Turbo for the past few years and it looks like I'm going to be selling it soon.

As I have been contemplating a replacement Porsche, tracking is probably the foremost priority on my list. Just about everything I read and see indicates that the GT3 is the best Porsche suited for tracking.

However, I just love all that torque and horsepower of my turbo. I really don't like all the weight that I have to manage around the corners, but I've kinda gotten used to it.

So, I was wondering if any of you actually chose to buy a 997 Turbo primarily for tracking over a GT3 or GT3RS. If so, are you happy with your decision?

Despite my fondness for crazy horsepower, I'm thinking that I should get a 997 GT3 next, but just wanted to check first to see if anyone has had good success tracking their turbo.

cheers.

Dan

Thanks for the suggestion...but I think that a 997 GT2 is a little bit out of my budget for right now. Anyway...I think I could probably buy a GT3 for myself and my wife for the price of a GT2!

A 997 TT with some susp mods and software will be very hard to beat by a GT3 in the track..

True^, plus coming from 600hp, a gt3 is going to get boring quick as it's maxed out at 400hp and no tq.
Actually I was suggesting a extremely low mile 996GT2, those are a steal right now.

I've never been a fan of the GT3. It's pretty uneventful in comparison to the TT. It's not a true race car either, if you want the best of both TT for sure. The GT2 is like the GT3 and TT in one, simply amazing.

You gotta weigh all of the differences, since you have a 996TT I imagine you dont mind the turbo lag nor the AWD.

With that in mind a 997TT with some suspension mods will easily hold its own against a GT3 or a GT3RS.

Consider also that the GT3RS is more expensive than a turbo (after dealer markup).

Also, remember that you cant really squeeze more HP out of the GT3 nor the GT3RS easily.

Personally I would go based on price. Consider that you would need to get coilovers and sways for the TT, as well as racing seats, and preferrably a bolt in cage w/harnesses. Get the total and compare that to a GT3 / GT3RS.

I think this comes down to a question of NA/RWD 400hp vs Turbo/AWD 500+hp.

In the end regardless of which you choose there will be some drawbacks, but on the bright side, either way you go, you will have an awesome track car. My 997TT w/PSS Damptronics is a completely different car than it was on the stock suspension. So I'd say unless you have a preference between NA vs Turbos or RWD vs AWD I would go with which ever you can get a better deal on.

The used Turbo market makes it a bargain compared to other Porsches at this time . Even the 997S for instance had climbed recently and the Gt models have various markups . Plus if you buy a used Gt3 I would feel a bit nervous as to pristime looking low milegae car designed for the track might have a higher damage potential than a used Turbo driven on the street. Of course either could be wrecked .

However if you are buying a new Turbo and begin adding all the mods it's going in kinda deep to miss the primary objective of the Gt2 as a track car .

If my goal was a track I would either bargain hunt for a used Turbo or compromise nothing and try and order a Gt2 . The problem with this is that if i blew all that money to get into a Gt2 I don't know if I's want to risk a wreck with it on the track .

The decision is tough .That's what makes it fun. Good luck with Turbo hunting.

I think 997 TT with Chip and exhaust and some suspension mods is the bset solution...since for the price of low mile 996 GT2...u can get 997 TT...

A light 997 Turbo: PCCBs, (GT2) buckets, new wheels,...with a kit: exhaust, ECU, filter,... is the bomb.

How about buying an old dedicated race car? Probably a fraction of what a TT will cost.

If tracking it is the foremost priority, then this is the best advice by far. (BTW, it's what I should have done also).

Yeah, I just think it's a LOT of money to spend on a new car, then mod it and still be compromised. Even the GT3. If tracking is it's sole purpose, do it right and save a bundle. It would suck to spend all that coin and have it wrecked on the track.

I was at a skip barber event a few months ago at lime rock and was looking at some for sale ads on the bulletin board. A couple of older 911 fully prepped race cars and a 944. All 3 were under 20K if I remember correctly.

Probably a blast to drive.

When I get done with my TT in 3 years Im definitely going this route.

Hopefully pick up a nice 993 race prepped car, or maybe a 996 if I find a good deal out there.
