Replace or Plug Tire help please!

With only 3200 miles on my new 997TT, I have already replaced one front tire due to a screw i ran over at 1600 miles, just replaced my windshield that took a rock and cracked, and today I noticed my rear tire has a nail in it (although not leaking). I would prefer not to keep replacing new tires if I don't have to. The nail is not in the sidewall and is in the tread line, so I was wondering if it is ok to do a plug patch? I do not plan on tracking the car - and only occasionally take drives at high speeds (used typically as my daily driver). Could I get your thoughts. Thank you!

I think your much better off to have the tire dismounted and patched. This is a much better option than the plug, for performance driving. When the plug heats up it could under high speed driving they don't last.

Sorry for all the mishaps.

I ran over a nail in each of my rear tires...one at 1500 miles, and the other at 3400 miles.

The dealer refused to patch the tire, and initally wanted me to replace all four...the tread difference with only 1500 miles couldn't possibly cause a difference in circumference that would cause problems with the drivetrain, so I replaced each tire as needed.

On my 996, I patched my rear tire twice, and never had a problem...I doubt that it would be a problem for the 997...especially if you aren't tracking the car.

^^^wow, you had both tire replacements at almost the exact same mileage as mine have happened. I can't believe we have to keep replacing them - this is getting rather expensive but will do it if it is really necessary.

I've personally plugged many a tire, street, track, snow on my c4s and my turbo. Never an issue. If you're a worry wart about these kind of things, just keep replacing tires, but that gets old bc you can't just replace one, gotta do a pr. Dealers love raping us that one.
Don't sweat it Greta.

Greta,
I have used the plug/patch combo with success. I do not track as well, I think if you go to a reputable tire shop you should have no problems. What happened on the windshield, I thought you had the film on and it would protect it? Must have been some large stone.

Plug/patch it. W/ 3200 miles you're going to need new tires in approx. less than 10k more miles anyway so you wont be driving w/ the patch forever.

Unfortunately the larger the tire tread footprint the higher the probability for flats..

Agreed a patch would work fine on a small puncture..

I had one of the PZeroRossos patched. Worked fine and have since put a few track days on it with no issues. $35 I think.

Everybody should carry a plug kit in their car, very easy to use.

T. Yes, my windshield took a rock (who knows where it came from - out of the sky), but it went right thru the film! I was offered a replacement film for free, but have decided not to put it back on since it does not protect against cracking. I was disappointed to say the least. I did get a nice new windshield and they did a perfect job - OEM.

I think that made my decision up on whether to do this or not. Hate to hear it happened.

Patch or plug, I've done it on my one Rear M3 tire, works fine, no issues, I've hit plenty high speeds with not a concern!
