How STRONG is Tiptrinic tranny and does it need to re-inforced ???

Guys...

Well since my car was dynoed at over 600 awhp...we are thinking about how long will this MB S600 (has 800 NM stock) gearbox which is rated at 1000NM - 766 ft.t will LAST with hard launches off the line and so on...on modified 997 TT

Did some reseach and only found out that 9FF is offering Tiptronic upgrade for 997 TT gearbox which is included: Stronger clutch packs, Extra oil pump and IC...rated to 800 HP and 900NM...which diff then MB states in stock form...

On MB the gearboxes seem to hold fine...but MB doesnt have 4wd, so there must be less stress the box, cause u cant put all the power to the ground off the line like 997 TT with 4wd can, so I assume this Tiptronic box get more abuse and stress ???...especially with moded 997 TT...

Anyone heard anything about mod 997 TT Tiptronic faliure and knows where we can get stronger clutch packs for this box in USA, please share ???

I want to be prepared just in cause once the car out of the USA if will be difficult to solve those probs espeacially if gearbox fails...plus there msut be reason why 9FF offer this mod...

hey gt rus, on my 996tt from 2005 we really didn't have any problems at the 750 level with a LOT of drag racing, tracking and pro drivers during shoot outs. It's took a lot of abuse... However Craig did endevour on something with 9ff back in the day who built him a quicker shifting beefed up transmission which apparently worked out well. Are you having issues with your tranny?

Hello Alex...thank for info...was this 996 TT 750 rwd kit that runned 10.35 or close to those times ???

Did 9FF did something before it got moded or after ??? Did he have TCU upgraded ???

My tranny is fine...is just we had that prob with ECU cutting down the power at 1st 3 gears...

I dont have any issues now but I dont want to ahve them, the car is not with ME still and I want to prepare jsut in case and thinking if I really need it or not ???

The problems that if it brakes it will take a lot of time and money to send it our Germany or USA to fix it, plus a lot of disaapointents and headaches...and since I waited for this car so long I dont want to have any probs at all next summer, since this season is alomost finshed here...Novermber winter starts and will enjoy my new mod sled...and drive SUV...so I really dont want to rush and do it everything porperly from the start...but I am not 100% sure if I need it at all...may be just add extra cooler and oil pump but I also heard that clutch pack can start slipping after hard abuse and I dont want this to happand to my car after I abuse it...

Vlad privet...its difficult to do it here...better do it from the start if this thing can become a problem...its like you can jsut replace the clutch the whole tranny will need to go abroad...probebaly will only cost about 4k to ship it both ways...not taking about re-inforecing...

I talked to them too but never really got anything definitive... Either way stick to what your tuner says (Tym). Anytime you go off of the reservation and mix and match it's not the best path

hey gt rus, back in the summer of 05 (july?) it ran mid tens after mid tens at 135-136mph. It was nice and consistent. We tried to go harder/faster and it did do 113mph in the 1/8th but then stuff started breaking and I put a stop to the madness The TCU wasn't touched but from my experience and pounding the tranny survived really well for a long, long time and only had issues after 750-ish. My issue with the modified tranny was that other than 9ff honestly nobody has proven anything and at that only on the one car (Craig's) that we know off. I ended up buying a spare transmission (for around 2k?) from LA Dismantlers and just used that for a rainy day so to speak... Either way, I'd see what Tym thinks is best?

Thanks for info Alex...so the car runned fine for long time without any tranny re-infocement, gear or clutch pack slipping at till you went over 750 HP ???

How did you re-porgrammed ECU or TCU inorder not to CUT this power in 1st gears ??? Did you actually faced those problems as well in 05 ???

You are right about everything and I do follow what Tym says but I try to help him...he actually thinks that am good at researching things )))...

We are going to test this trans and see what we should do, we are also considering 9FF but no info from them yet...Other MB tuner says that they can do it cause tranny is the same but dont want to sell us just the parts...

May be you know where we can get stronger lamellas (Clutch packs) for TipS ??? The rest Tym might do it him self...but we are still looking into it...

Back then the tuning wasn't where it is today and we didn't know then what we know now for tips but it did run at the track like that. It just could/should have been better... We had those issues although the only thing I changed was a re-veined torque converter. If you can actually get anywhere or any real information about the parts used by these guys it would be amazing. The only thing I would get is "give us 8k and we'll re-inforce you're tranny (and paint it red or blue)". It was highly secretive for some reason...

I know what 9FF do...

It was on their site before then when i started to ask them about it and askiong them to sell ME the part, they remove all the info and just article numbers...

Their kit inlcudes:

Stronger lamellas
Etra oil pump
and diff oil IC or trans IC - I dont remember extactly...

Here what is done on MB box: mainly Maybach Gaurds parts with some others

- Line pressure and extensive valve body modifications
- Reinforced/Modified clutch packs
- High stall modified torque converter!
- Transmission is rated to handle 1200lb/ft of torque !!!!!!!!

I can get is done a distrib price for 3950...ussually 5k...

This guy did couple of 996 TT Tips boxes already as well as a lot of AMG one...

As for torgue converter..Tym actually thinks 997 TT Tips converter is quite good...I think it diff then to waht 996 had but Evoms changed converter on EVT 700 car as well that went to Finland...and if I recall correctly before you mentioned to be that its not necessary...can it make some diff in our case ???
