AWE 750R - Self Install and Review. (with pictures)

Wanted to share some driving impressions, but actual driving experience since we completed the install eleven days ago has been limited. Cold temperatures and a mix of rain and sleet have characterized our Mid-Western winter weather. Yesterday our luck changed and, in between weather fronts, we enjoyed a rare 65-degree day and the chance for a shakedown cruise. Here are a few highlights of our outing as we tried to validate that everything we touched on the car still works!

Took the car downtown briefly for a stop-and-go driving segment where speed, for the majority of the time, was under 35mph. We experienced no evidence of rough idling, stalling, or general quirkiness. Aside from the throaty exhaust, the experience was uneventful and the car drove, handled and behaved like our stock Turbo. Unlike our stock Turbo, it answered our call for power with a response that was immediate, urgent but totally under control. A fuel top-off placed fuel mileage at about 20.9 mpg, similar to what we experienced before the install. We were in the non-sport mode and on the pump gas setting.

Near the end of the day, we happened upon a tractor-free road. This isolated stretch allowed us to see if our throttle body coupler and intercooler hoses would "stay on" under full boost. This was also our first chance to run the car in the sport mode.

Feathered the throttle in the first two gears and hammered it in third to put max, sustained pressure on the clamps and fittings. Almost instantly, the rpm's raced past 3000 and the boost gauge surged towards max. Somewhere north of 3500, the psm indicator flickered briefly in 3rd and then again after shifting into 4th. The rapid rate of acceleration, the flickering psm indicator and the absence of an on-board radar detector triggered numerous mental images, which caused me to back out of the throttle rather than shift into 5th. In retrospect, didn't run out of road and certainly didn't run out of power; an old dude just ran out of courage! Although we don't have data to support our impressions, our Turbo, as currently configured, is way, way faster than stock.

Of note, all the hoses and clamps held firm and we experienced no CEL's. After topping off, fuel consumption for this spirited driving segment came in at about 17.5 mpg. By all accounts this project is a winner! The driver, well that's another project.... <O
