1st gear jerked when hitting red line..

Hi guys,

Am driving a 997 turbo tip 5gears.. I have this problem lately, or rather most of the time when i engaged sports mode mannual.

1st gear, full throttle, JERKED, when it reached red line and changing to 2nd gear simultaneously..

However, there were times when i switched to 2nd gear without the "jerk" feeling.. i shifted to 2nd before hitting red line..

Any problems with the car?

Thanks in advance..

Ron

Not sure there is much point in taking the car to redline...my sense is that torque and hp both peak before then. Would be interested in view from others...

more updates..

2nd to 3rd gear has no problem, and so on.. I have upgraded ecu and tubi exhaust.

The jerk kinda pulls and a noticeable 2 second delay before the 2nd gear kicks in..

Has anyone encountered this before? Is this some sort of boost leak or normal? My tech cant seem to give me a satisfactory reason..

if you are taking it to redline you are probably triggering the rev limiter, which is designed to protect the motor...

That must be a super feeling not to hit the rev-limiter in 1st gear and lose speed big time. That is the only problem with a manual; 39 m/h comes so fast, it is tough to remember to shift in that split 1-2 seconds and you lose so much acceleration getting into second. Sometimes in second, I have that same problem at 70...if you don't remember that shift, the tt's acceleration once again goes to crap. However, still with that luxury, I don't think it's worth getting a tt with an automatic.

You don't get full hp/torque at the redline, so maybe its time to adjust your driving technique.

Poster said he has an upgraded ECU - so, while it may be that he is hitting the limiter, it may also be that his upgraded ECU is pushing lots of boost, and the car is detonating and pulling timing. I would stay safe and get it checked out - AFR's and EGT's.

Regarding the 1-2 shift, it depends on the area under the curve in 2nd gear after the short shift versus area under the curve after the redline shift. Even so, I would still say if it is more fun to shift at redline, continue doing so lol.
