Crazy to buy a 2009 TT?
^thanks
. No-spell checkie, and it's early here...I'm not awake. In '98 I bought my LR Discovery 1 for almost 50k. The first few years of ownership, the depreciation was killing me. Then I realized, who cares? I'm not selling
. I've had the truck for 11 years now and it has saved me money in that I haven't had to buy a replacement. I still love it, and hope to have it another 11 years. I plan on keeping my C2S forever as well, and every month that I have it...the average monthly cost of ownership goes down!

You never know what life has in store, but the only way I could rationalize buying my '08 new last year was that I was going to keep it forever. So I don't really care about resale. I can't emagine buying one of these cars and only keeping it for a few years and takiing a 30-60k depreciation hit, just to buy another one. Seems a waste of money to me. If you keep the car this helps you avoid buying another one, then it can actually save you money in the long run. If you are just going to sell it, buy used or lease.

I bought 2009 C63 AMG for my daily driver and I do plan to drive this until it dies. Even so, it's a depreciating asset. So whether I choose to sell it 1 year, 2 years, or never, I'm still losing money. My depreciation is either realized or deferred, but I can't get around it. Again, it would only be until I purchase another car and assume that car's incremental depreciation do I take a bigger $ hit.
That's why leasing can sometimes make financial sense for people who "need" a new car every 3 years. For this to make any reasonable financial sense, the lease rate must be very close to a loan rate, and the residual must be equal to or higher than what the leasee expects the car to be worth.
But this is not intended to be a lease versus buy thread. I just wanted to emphasize the point in para 1 above and I don't insinuate that Ghotimanx missed that point.
It's true that depreciation continues throughout ownership, but the biggest hit is up-front. If you like to flip cars every couple of years it doesn't make sense to buy a new 997TT now, but if you intend to keep it till either you or the car dies (like me) then that's a different story. Mine is due in at the dealer in about two weeks, then it's off to Evolution for the EVT720...
Final price...accept?
All...thank you again for the feedback, much appreciated.
I've decided that a TT suits my tastes much better than my C2S, and that I'll be keeping it with no plans to trade (we all know that can change).
Here's the offer I have:
* 2009 TT Coupe, 6 spd, $135,490 MSRP
* Selling price = $116,200
* They will buy my 2006 C2S Cab for $59,000
Thoughts on this deal?

Sounds pretty good to me. What's the Edmunds' trade value on the C2S? I placed my order in early January, back before things really fell apart and am stuck paying sticker.... At least I can get the 2.99%.
I'll give it some time. I'm in no hurry as there are many '09 turbos still on dealer lots & I'm truly enjoying my C2S Cab!

Thoughts? I'd buy it but I do live by my own words as I traded in my 5 month old 997S for a Turbo .
Also, those terms assume a cash payment balance, which I have no problem making. But, there is a 1.99% finance rate -- and since my money market pays me 2.5%, makes no sense to outlay the cash. If I take the finance option, however, the selling price goes from $116,200 to $126,200. So they would have to finance the trade-in difference of the $116,200 for me to close the deal.
I also discovered that there's a 3.5% lease rate. Normally I hate leasing, but with the unknown of this car's value in 3 years, and with the 998 coming out, and...with me not being very, very sure I'd keep the car for 5+ years, leasing is an option as well. I'd take the trade-in money ($59,000), bank it, make 2.5% on it, and pay an effective 1% lease rate (actually it's technically not 1% since I'm banking only a partial amount of the residual plus the MSRP, but you get the point). And, at the end of the day, the car is likely worth about the residual amount in the lease -- which is about $72,000!
So with all of this, some might say, just buy the damn thing & stop fretting about the time value of money, etc. Yeah, I could, but I love structuring the optimal financial terms along with the selling price. As the saying goes...penny's make dollars, and if one is not careful counting penny's, they can lose dollars just as well. Just my $.02 (and counting).
Oh, and I have a joyous, fully-paid 997 C2S Cab that's no slouch as I ponder.
Driving in circles--you bet I am. I'll get there.

Taylor I am going to sell my 09 AMG and get an 07 TT. Those are going in the
high 70's now just dipping below 80K that is pretty cheap for a supercar.
Now find me someone who wants a cherry 09 AMG C63 black on black with clear
bra! 2900 miles and I will be getting a 07 TT!!

Used still an attractive option
Well...at least I'm keeping all of my jabbering in a single thread, so for anyone who is actually reading my more recent posts, thank you.
I re-read all of the posts in this thread. There is a tremendous divide in opinions (not surprising). Here is a summary:
* Stay with your 2006 C2S Cab (someone went from a boxter to a C2S to a TT and then back to a C2S all in the 2008 model year) -- at least I'm not that extremen
* Buy used...get a 2007 TT for low $80's. I did a national search and found some good buys in this price range, many with low miles.
* Buy new...the 2009's are heavily discounted and have very attractive finance rates (as with 1.99% financing it makes no sense to outlay the cash when money markets are paying 2.5%)
* Wait, and put an order in for the 2010 (w/ direct fuel injection, slight body style change, etc.
* See a therapist (I took liberty on this one, though I don't believe this one is mutually exclusive).
Certainly pros and cons for all of the first 3 bullets. Comments to this post very welcome.
