Thinking about trading the 997TT for R8...
Real tough one and honestly a good test drive would be in order... Back to back if possible. On the plus side it's quite different looking (although a bit awkward from the side). From my short time in one it felt like a bulkier Cayman. Great handling out of the box but underpowered but sounded great (with a Stasis exhaust). Interior etc. is all great. Top notch actually. Overall I'd compare it to a C4S in terms of power/weight ratio rather than a TT. A turbo with coil overs, exhaust/software would really blow the pants off of it in most scenarios. It's like awakening a sleeping giant. Although even in stock form the turbo would seriously spank an R8 in a straight line. The torque just isn't there in an R8.
I caught a V10 3 months ago and i wasn't impressed at all. Although i wasn't with the 997TT, in the highway the R8 gained the max of 1 car lenght during several 80-200kph runs against my remaped BMW 535d (3.0 biturbo-diesel) with 360hp and 800nm.
I think it would be a mistake to go from a 911 turbo down to an R8. The only thing the R8 got going for it is its looks but you have to ask yourself how satisfied would you be in a "audi" R8 after in the really fast turbo.
Until Switzer/Heffner etc... develops a Twin Turbo system for the R8.
The R8 is more exclusive. Only 'car guys' can tell a 911TT from a base 911 or 911S. And if the base cars have aero kits , spoilers the TT blends in even more. Have not seen alot of R8's driving around but loads of 911's.
I own a 997TT, but my father and I share an 06 Gallardo E-Gear. I would have to say that for every day driving the 997TT is much more user friendly and practical. The suspensiion is "rough" to say the least on the Gallardo. Nothing compares to the looks you get while in a Gallardo though. It's like being a movie star. You are usually the center of attn wherever you go. It's fun to drive fast and slow.
Now the 997TT vs the r8? i would probably go 997TT .. even though the R8 does look fun and semi-exotic. I cannot stand the styling of the "different" color panels just past the doors. If i were you I would wait a year or two and pick up an 05-06 G car instead. If you go 05 just makes sure it has the front-end lift option, it wasn't standard until 06. There is no replaceable breakaway plastic piece like on the turbo.
Hope this helps.

actually started searching for gallardo's ever since this thread started and will probably have to wait until the beginning of the year to find a good deal on a 06. thanks for all the advice!
To the previous comment; why would one need a yellow turbo to get any looks? and as far as the R8 surpassing the 997 in the looks department - that is also a matter of opinion. I get plenty of looks with my black turbo, at times it does get a bit tedious, and yes I have been a passenger in an r8, turns just as much heads as my turbo.
This is an old post, but may be worth stirring the pot. My R8 has all the power I need, but I don't get many speeding tickets. I did pass a CHP doing 122 while he was parked. You cannot out run their radio.

Moving from a 997tt to a V8 R8 is a downgrade. I wouldn't do that for a V10 R8 either. If you want something that is really cool,get a LP560-4 or LP550-2. That's a real upgrade in both performance and look!
