Suspension, Tires
Hi all,
I need some advise. Recently I started tracking my car and am running the stock suspension and stock Michelin tires. Tires are about toast so I am thinking of getting some cup tires unless any of you have a better recommendation. Currently I have upgraded my exhaust, headers, I/C and ecu. So I have plenty of power but, would like to utilize that power by being on the gas earlier coming out of corners. I need better grip for this.
My questions:
Will Bilstein PSS10 Coil overs work with PASM?
If I just do new springs and sway bars will this be as good as the Bilsteins?
What is the difference between H&R and Bilsteins? Better recommendations?
What tires have any of you used and what is recommended?
At this point I do not have a trailer for my car so I drive to the track. The tracks are 70 to 200 miles away. I hope to get a trailer soon, but, not sure when.
Thanks for reading my post.

My questions:
Will Bilstein PSS10 Coil overs work with PASM? Yes, and it's a great ride. PASM now becomes usable. The PSS10/B16s transform your ride totally.
If I just do new springs and sway bars will this be as good as the Bilsteins? No IMO. Do Coilovers and sway bars at the same time. Lower the car around 15-20mm.
What is the difference between H&R and Bilsteins? Better recommendations? Bilstein makes the OEM coils for Porsche. They also make them for most of the Benz and others. Trusted name.
What tires have any of you used and what is recommended? Michelin PS2 or Sport Cups

Thank you your feedback is very helpful.
I am leaning towards the Bilstiens, can you describe what I would enjoy with the Bilstiens/sway over the springs/sway?

I'd go with the new motons available for the turbo from GMG. They are also coming out with a pasm compatable unit soon. Personally, I have the GMG springs/sways/etc, works flawlessly at the track, I can't believe that just adding B16s would be dramatically different on my car. The only issue is premature wear on the stock dampners when using springs, when mine are shot, I'll add motons and be done with it.
I wont get into the suspension discussion because its been done so much before.
As for tires, here is what I learned unfortunately through my own mistakes:
1) Street Tires: Michelin Pilot Sports - If your tires are squealing on every turn already then you can't use street tires anymore. Their sidewall isnt strong enough to handle the lateral forces in the turns. What will happen is that you will wear out the outside sidewall regardless of how much reasonable negative camber you add. What I've seen with street tires is that higher pressure preserve the tires longer, usually cup tires run around 33-35 psi hot, with street tires dont be afraid to do 38-40 psi when hot.
2) Cup tires: Toyo R888s, Michilen Cups, BridgeStone RE-11 - The R888s are very noisy on the street since you commute to the track and drive the car I dont recommend them, they are irritating. They hydro plane as bad as the Michelin Cups. The Cups seem to last the least for me, I dont know about others experience but they last around 30-40% less. Ive switched to the Bridgestone RE-11 and love them. They are quiet on the street, perform better than both the R888 and Cups in the rain (but you should still drive slower), and they perform as well on the track. Their tread life is great and grip is on par with the cups. I run them about 31-32 in the front when hot and 32-34 hot in the rear. Not to mention they are $700 cheaper for a set than the Cups and you can grab them from tirerack.

LOL raiyu. Very good info you posted, and judging from that quote above, looks like I don't need to move up from street tires any time soon.
(Just what speed are you cornering at, young man?) JS1967,
Looks like Neil has answered most of your questions already. But anyway yes, for a street/track combination suspension, Bilstein coilover is the safest, probably "best," and definitely most popular choice. Made by the company that does the OEM coilover and uses Porsche's chief test driver as consultant, it is a no brainer mod if ever there is one. Thread in my signature has more info also. Good luck and have fun and trust us, it will transform your Turbo.
Thank you all for the information and advice I feel confident that the bilsteins are what I am looking for. Tires are squealing so I will go with a track oriented tire. Good information thanks again.
I am trying to keep up with my buddy who tracks a modified 09 GTR. I need more grip to keep up with him coming out of the corners. I must say that after a few laps in the GTR I can not get over how much grip it has. It does inspire a lot of confidence. Not saying I want one, would buy one if that is what I wanted. That said, the GTR is force to be reckoned with.
Which brings me to another thought or experience and that is guys in vettes at the track are very aggressive and man do they talk nonstop bull^%$*! Why is that?

Bilstein sucks. When PASM is engaged okay it's a tougher ride and a more stable ride but i wouldn't use it for tracks. Go with a JIC or Motons if you're going to track the car. I have the PSS10's on mine, used them for exactly 30 minutes and i'm tossing them away soon for Motons ... just to give you an idea

For the record, H&R has been a primary supplier to Porsche for many years, the OEM springs on the GT2/3 are made by H&R. Bilstein makes the OEM dampers for Porsche and others. I doubt they make their own springs. I would not be surprised to find the springs on the Bilsteins are actually made by H&R or Eibach, the 2 main spring manufacturers in Germany.

BTW, your post on tires sounds very good to me so I quoted it on rennteam (the Bilstein thread). Someone there responded and mentioned Pirelli Corsa, which I too have heard a lot about. I believe the gist of it is Corsa is as good as Michelin Cup, but with better wet traction.
Any comment on this tire?
