The Tiptronic Retires ?
"Over and over again it goes, the slamming of the tiptronic transmission.....To each their own. I wonder has every single person that slams this transmission actually driven one or just jumping on the band wagon."
I cannot speak for "every sensible person" yet I not only had the opportunity to drive a 2007 Turbo Tip but, in fact, owned one. Within two weeks of delivery, my order was in the system for a 2008 Turbo manual. The choice between Tip and 6speed is, of course, a matter of personal perference. For me, the Tip was an anathema. At the risk of seeming officious, a test drive of the SL63 or SL65 may be worthwhile as, solely in my opinion, the Tip works well in either of these vehicles.

Autotrans-demise point well taken, Manuals demand constant eye to hand coordination and an acute awareness to be ready to shift quick on rapid acceleration especially with turbos having a low 6800 redline.
For such a problem, the PDK may seem a godsend, but I think unlike the autotrans, PDK may be here to stay. Auto manufacturers think their computer can do better than drivers and their antilock brakes appears living proof, but pdk will sure take the thrill out of absolute car control for drivers.
I know Porsche could have come out with a lock-out to avoid overrevs on manuals, but instead of something low cost, they've come out with a trans that the public will have to pay big bucks for if they want a porsche and this means more profit. And lets face it, what lady or over 50 man wants to take out time to develop (or maybe can"t even do it with time) the fine-art of manual shifting.

Torque converter automatic transmissions are not known for their efficiency, and hence performance. It just so happened that the Tip torque converter and the twin turbo synergized to a degree that gave it acceptable performance. As this was novel for the Tip it became a marketing tool for Porsche. It's a sign of maturity when you are able to make a choice for yourself without having to convince others that your choice is best. Not a common commodity on the internet.
There are many more 6 speeds for sale online than tips. If you see a good deal on a 2007 TIP, let me know. I have been searching for 2 weeks now. Most are Manuals around Florida, I am dieing to drive the auto to see the difference.
