The Tiptronic Retires ?
The Tiptronic Retires ?
Does anyone remember back in 2006 how much praise the Tiptronic got in the 997 Turbo ? It was touted as being faster than a manual and many bought them.

Time flys --huh ?
So it was great then but is about to retire now ?
It didn't dawn on me until I started noticing that on auto trader there are soooooooo many Turbo Tips for sale .
Has anyone questioned why the Tip got so much praise ?
Has anyone questioned how many units were made ? How much parts were cleared out ?
Has anyone questioned if PDK was in its design phase while the Tip was being praised ?
I didn't . After all I bought a manual. I never even considered a Turbo tip.
I never questiioned this at all but I can't help but think of all the reasons why there are so many Tiptronics made and now so many are for sale .
A 2007 997Turbo Tip with some nice options =roughly 140 (give or take 15K) . And they now retail for about 90? Wholesale in the upper 70's .
140 - 78 = 62 . So that's 62 thousand dollars of greatness that isn't as great anymore ?
Some ask if PDK is a fad . I feel its very real thing . It probably will evolve too and get even better . It looks like a lot of Tiptronic parts are on used car lots . Oh well .. ???!!!! It's starting to make some sense now.

Combined that with no Sport Chrono, than you got the black sheep in the family too.
What I was told by someone at the Porsche dealer once regarding the Tip when it first came out was, Porsche knew the Tip was coming to the end, and all those Tips laying around the factory had to go some there. So, the marketing department got smart by saying hey, faster car = more sales, lets stick them in the turbo.
Whether there is any truth to this, who knows. But, sounded like a possiblity though, cause, they sure pushed that idea to the max.
These clutchless manual trannies will go through infinite iterations. I mean, look at Ferrari. Arguably the best one out there, and they constantly try to improve on it. PDK V.1 will come and go just like the Tip.
That good = as you mentioned, faster on the track, faster in a straight line.
Im going to give it a shot on my next car.

Over and over again it goes, the slamming of the tiptronic transmission.....To each their own. I wonder has every single person that slams this transmission actually driven one or just jumping on the band wagon. Yes they are retired, that is advancement in technology. Out with old in with the new.
As far as transmissions go they are as strong as they come and can handle huge power increases. They are Mercedes not Porsche and have the M tag/info affixed to them and are used in their 738lbft tq cars.
I am not defending the laurels or lack thereof the tip, nor was I forced to buy mine. Obviously there are some shortcomings (not nearly as bad I feel, as some would have you believe!!) but I am pretty sure that with the Evoms TCU tune and ECU as well, I will be satisfied with mine for a few more years at least and I'm quite sure I am not alone......As far as re-sale value/ease of re-sale etc....I could not care less.
My name is Scott and I drive a tiptronic!! There I've said it

I am not criticing the Tiptonic as much as questiong why it was praised so highly. What it an attempt to clear away the parts ? To make room for PDK ? In previous models Turbo Tips were not popular but that one little 0-60 claim took alot of Tiptronic parts off the shelf and put them on the road .
And now those owners have faced a huge depreciation and those cars are abundant in the for sale ads.

I myself have benefitted from the neg. press, new PDK etc...as my car stickered for $143K+ and I got it with 4k miles on it, fact. & CPO'd for just a tick over $90k. To me it was a bargain. I do agree it would be a real kick in the crotch to have paid that much and be in a selling situation and take a $50k hit with onky 4k miles on the clock!

I cannot speak for "every sensible person" yet I not only had the opportunity to drive a 2007 Turbo Tip but, in fact, owned one. Within two weeks of delivery, my order was in the system for a 2008 Turbo manual. The choice between Tip and 6speed is, of course, a matter of personal perference. For me, the Tip was an anathema. At the risk of seeming officious, a test drive of the SL63 or SL65 may be worthwhile as, solely in my opinion, the Tip works well in either of these vehicles.
