997TT at Porsche of Huntington waiting for new engine: Anyone here?
dropped off my car this morning at porsche of huntington and saw a 997Tt with an empty engine bay
Frightful sight.
SA said they were waiting for a new engine to come in. Oh yeah, he also said the car was modded so no warranty. Yikes!! That will be one very large bill. Wasn't even my car and I felt a bit sick in the stomach.

He did say it was over rev'd. You don't need mods to damage the enigne from an over rev, so that would be pretty sucky if the guy just had a simple ECU/exhaust etc. like so many other people. God, i'm feeling sick again LOL. I just couldn't imagine getting a bill like that. I thought I heard it was close to 60K?

that would be the one. he didn't say what the mods were; said he wasn't sure, but it seemed like he really didn't want to talk about it.

Usually with mechanical overrevs, if a panic-mistaken shift into 2nd is caught quick enough, this usually results in only bent valves. Cost 10-20K. If the valve went thru a piston, that generally means another engine.
Some dealers, say if the redline is extended, this alone can cause an overrev issue, but for any major damage, >8500 rpms is required via a mechanical overrev from a mistaken downshift to 2nd at highspeed. That's what is nice with the PDK trans, the electronics stop panic bad shifts which can prove costly for these "interference" powered engines.
Its a shame something electronic like that was not devised for manuals a long time ago, but I guess why bother when porsche can make all this money with shredded engines. The bad thing about this problem is that insurance will not cover the damage. They claim driver error. You can run your porsche into a tree or lake which gets paid for (despite driver error), but you best not make a mistake and shift into second at high road speed...that is unforgiveable by porsche warranty or personal car insurance.
.
You are correct there. Totaling gets you some money by the insurance co. You mechanically overrev the "interference" engine and it is the driver's cost only, no warranty, no insurance will pay any of this expense. I overreved my M3 at one time in a panic situation to avoid a bad accident at highspeed. The brakes just were not stopping the car fast enough and I shifted into second which avoided a deadly accident, and my insurance co. told me to run into a lake, if I wanted to get reimbursed. Overreving is a special kind of driver error that they would not pay for. They would have covered the car, however, if I would have let the accident happen. However, I wonder what they would have said if someone would have died in the wreck

That sounds like conrods or valves then. I guess it depends on how over-revved. If we're talking about 500rpm, then it's a bit poor but if someone selected 2nd instead of 4th on a downshift from 5th at 120mph then no warranty is going to cover it stock or not. Would be classed at abuse at 12,000rpm LOL.
