Pre-Purchase DME advice / over-revs
I know this is discussed a lot, but I am about to pull the trigger on a 2007 997TT, Tip from a dealer and wanted to get comments on the DME interrogation:
Ignitions:
Range 1: 4641 412.9 h
Range 2: 241 405.1 h
Range 3: 1 172.6 h
Range 4: 1 172.6 h
Range 5: 1 172.6 h
Range 6: 1 172.6 h
Happy to supply any other PPI data that would be helpful.
I am unsure how you can have 1 ignition in any range. I've seen this debated before, but left unresolved.
Thanks for everyone's thoughts. I am likely buying the car in the next 24 hrs, so speak now or forever hold your peace.

wait a second, if this is a tiptronic then why are you concenred about over-revs? On my 335 bmw the car would automatically shift at redline in tiptronic mode, and it would not let me downshift into a gear that would be over-revving....
somethings fishy here?

I may have this confused, but as it was explained to me, what you are seeing is the number of occurrences and the last engine time it happened.
I was also told it was 'normal' to see hundreds of L1 and L2. However this car appears to have thousands of events in only hundreds of hours.
I would probably ask someone not interested in the sale to explain this to you properly.

May have popped out of gear or somehow found neutral. It looks like it was ridden hard and put up wet to me.
OK, so this DME report really isn't bad. The Range 1 and 2's are legit but the others are in error. You can not have 1 ignition in each range 3-6 as it is cumulative so this a DME error not a driver problem. Range 1-3 are considered normal. The car is fine.
To read the report: The number is the amount of ignitions (6cyl = 3 ignitions per revolution) in that range and the hours indicate the last engine hour when the ignition occurred.
Range 1: 7300-7500rpm
Range 2: 7500-7700
Range 3: 7700-7900
Range 4: 7900-8400
Range 5: 8400-9500
Range 6: 9500-11000<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

This is one data point as mentioned.
