996TT X50 or 997TT
Very interesting thread...funny thing tomorrow i will sell my 996TT and next week i ll buy a 997TT...it is obvious that 997TT is a better car...It is more refined, with better build quality...I havent drive fast a 997TT so to decide which car i like best...however from an engineers view 997TT has 2 seperate MAFs so there is no way to overload and blow them...So one failure issue of 996TT is gone...I hadnt realize 997TT was heavier than 996TT...considering it has aluminium doors and no spare wheel...weird...when porsche launched 997TT a better AWD system was advertised...three friends of mine that went from 996 to 997 found it better...But i dont have a personal opinion yet...Probably i ll miss my 996...
. and, we look forward to Tall T making his decision very soon
. And, wish you luck with that 997tt
. Enjoy!! Im sure you wont miss that 996tt...oops..
I don't recall who the manufacturer is, but YES, they actually have a car like exhaust sound for safety reasons. They wanted people to hear the car in places that pedestrians and cars share, like parking garages and lots.

I still maintain the statement is an illusion – 997TT will not outperform a 996TT through corners (forget X50 I am talking about a stock 996TT). Secondly once you flash 996TT for $1K the 997TTwill not outperform the 996TT on the straight line. Toss another 7K into the 996TT and it will blow 997TT clean out of the water both through corners and straights and you will still have 20K difference in money to play with. And the sad thing is that the dashboard stopwatch on your 997TT will prove my point. Now call me “dim-witted” but this really doesn’t strike me as how the 997TT is sooo muuuch better in sooo many waaays if we are talking about performance and platform abilities? The rest is merely aesthetics.

no my friend...996TT maf is rated at 420-450 hp...when the car is high hp,above 600hp,maf reches its limits and it is easy to be burned...this is the reason that very high hp 996TT cars eliminate stock maf and go with Ford or Hitachi maf...on the other hand 997TT have two seperate mafs, one for each turbo...and so there is no possibility to reach the limit of each one (approx.1400hp total)

997TT's Mafs, good for 1400bhp? Have you been drinking today?
.Anyway we are comparing 996TTX50 and stock 997TT at 450/480bhp so MAF rally isn't the issue.

Terminator, firstly i have no beef with you, heavy chevy, or any other 996tt owner or, the 996tt car. I completely understand that you love your cars and I dont want to spoil any of that. Im happy you guys are happy. However dont forget this is a 997tt forum and there has been a few over the line crossings made along the way....some on the disrespectful side of things IMHO. I never read anything sinister or malicious in what the earlier 997tt guys opined about their 997tts vs the 996tt. Everything was said in a cool calm and collected manner and that was that. I think you are getting a touch wound up.....overly sensitive on this. No one has said the 996tt is a POS... in fact to the contrary....respect has always been shown.
From where i sit as a 997tt owner all i can honestly say is I am happy with my own lot and, have no desire to throw off or make underhanded statements to the next guy who may have a later or earlier iteration of what I drive. If they wish to think their cars are better then allow them that "fantasy".. if you will. As I said, the guys i know who have moved from their 996tt's to 997tt's are extremely happy satisfied and impressed. None are pinning over the loss of their 996tt's, instead have left them in fond memory, as i did myself. If youve opted to stay in one then great, im honestly stoked for you.
997tt was never to be a revolution and everyone knows that. The last revolution was the 996 water cooled platform and there may not be another revolution as such for some time for all i know (or care). 997tt.2 is out and i dont hear 997tt .1 owners whining and *****ing as you are saying they will do. And then..saying you cant wait to hear the carry on of 997.1 owners when 991tt/998tt arrives. I mean why would we bother? we are having way too much fun and accept that Porsche never makes the next version worse (as you would have some believe). What you guys need to accept (for good bad or otherwise) is the fact that 996tt gave its crown up the day 997tt arrived...end of story. Again Porsche doesnt make its cars worse. When 991/998 arrives i wont be whining and carrying on because it is the new crown wearer. That would be making a complete mug out of myself. Anyway its good to see you have toned down a bit in your later posts. Keep smiling

Nowadays especially in the car industry, I find that newer is not necessarily better.

I have to disagree. All car industries move forward but they have several aspects to measure: performance vs consumption efficiency; handling vs confort; luxurious interior/safety vs lightweight.
It is quite obvious that you can put the previous version to perform better than the newer and still save money. But this is for every car company. And why? Because we are talking about old cars vs new cars, that depreciated almost half the price when new and during that time the aftermarket had time enough to develop parts to increase its performance level. Back to the first years of the 996TT, this car only saw dust from the 993TT with factory power kit (450hp).
Like i said before, both are top cars but the 997TT is a little better. And the extra money that you pay now for a 2007 997TT, you will receive it when selling the car in a few years compared to the market of the 996TT at that time. For the 996TT owners that bought the car new or almost new, my advice is keep them and only trade it for the 998. The money you lost with the depreciation don't justify getting a 997TT.

The 993 had almost as much hp (400) the 996 and weighed 200 lbs less (yes even the regular one). The variant you mention had a huge weight/power advantage at 450 hp. I don't see how that is the same. There was no 996 TT variant that had more power than a 997 TT or better weight/power ratio. If there were one, I think we could all imagine what would have happened. My point is that in the scenario you mention, the 996 TT has the worst weight/power ratio out of the three.
Not to mention the 993 Turbo also had an LSD, something the 996 is the only model to be regularly excluded from.
The 993 at the time was the last of the cream of the crop Turbos, meaning there was little or no watering it down to make it slower than a GT3. It was far more driver oriented than both the 996 and 997. However the 996 was a clear step ahead without needing a big step up in weight/power ratio, in fact it stepped down in that area and is the worst of the recent generation Turbo's.

So Tall T where are you up to? Come to a verdict as such? Or, have we just confused you further. We're now 5 pages in and my curiosity is starting to get the better of me
. That constant pounding comming from the heavy chevy and terminator campsites indicates a decision will need to be made soon to put all this to bed. WSY?

.As to what I'm going to buy, I must admit that I continue to go back & forth a bit based on the many issues raised here as well as the points I tried to make in my last post. However, with that said I'm leaning towards the 997 TT. I'm told that I am, by nature, a very meticulous person so my purchase probably won't occur right away. I know the color combo & options I want. I can see the car in my mind's eye but finding it may take awhile as I'm not one to "settle". I hope not; if the right car comes along I'll buy it tomorrow.
In any event, I want to thank everyone here who has tried to help me sort through my questions & voice their ideas. I think lot of very valid points have been raised on both sides. I've learned a lot & that is always a good thing.
