996TT X50 or 997TT
.
The issue for you is simply dollars and cents. If you can swing the extra $$$ I think getting a 997 is a no-brainer. My old X50 was great but its hard to compete with all of the amenities of the newer model. I would only consider getting the 996 over the 997 if I was going to mod the crap out of the car and I was on a fixed budget (ie. 700hp 996 vs. 480hp 997). Either way you cant go wrong.
That very point was raised earlier but went down like a lead baloon with some
.
Tall T, Since you have open yourself up for advice. Go drive them both. Drive them as close to the same roads and amount of time as you can as well. Think on it, then drive them again. Think on it and do like you have done here and ask people who own them lots of questions. Ask other car salesman that deals w/ Porsche their views. Read every magazine article you can on both. Then drive them again. Get the finance in place for either, sleep on it, and get up and buy 1 and never look back. Or not. <O

Not sure about the bit about asking the salesman which to get....thats too funny
. The rest is ok.
Surely you must know that salesman will do what salesmen do best..... find out how much you want to (or have to) spend then tell you all what you want to hear to get the money off you. Whats with you guys with car salesmen?
Ive heard this salesman advice thing so many times now.

To over look the people that see these cars everyday, hear the good and bad of the car from the owners, and have to rely on word of mouth to make another sale/make a living… well IMHO you are over looking a valuable resource in the purchasing of a vehicle.<O

I had a 6 speed 03 996 TT X50 and put approx. 30K plus miles on her in 3 years. I also went through 2 trannies and a gear shift linkage (all covered under warranty). She was bone stock and sounded great. FWIW she was the most fun ride I ever had. She was a daily driver and except for an 850 hp TT Lingefelter Z06 she never lost a race to a car (superbikes dont count).
Now I have a tip 07 997 TT with over 32K miles on her. My bone stock 997 is simply put a docile sounding lamb next to my old X50. However, she only sounds docile. She is faster and handles better than the 996. At a Pocono DRE last July there were 3 other 996 TTs in my Green Run Group (some were even modded). My 997 was clearly the fastest runner (trust me it wasnt driver skill). The 997 is way more GT like in that it is simply a plusher ride as a daily driver (ie. cup holders for your Starbucks). Like my 996 she has excelled at vanquishing all comers. She has even stood toe to toe with an orange LP640 and a new blue ZR1.

... I have 04 X50, 530bhp, nearly 80K miles, fast road and track use and I am on my first tranny with absolutely zero problems. This is bizarre - the twilight zone?
.
Not saying that tortesq1 was the problem but the transmission (other than the pop-out) is not a weak point on the Turbo's. However as with any manual, enough abuse and bad shifting over a few owners is bound to take it's toll.
Surely you know the difference between a salesman BSing you for a sale and giving you their opinion on a car? I can honestly say I had a few salesmen from all over the country more then willing to talk about their knowledge of the car I was looking at and why it is or isn’t as good as the another car. In fact a local guy gave me some great advice on these cars that lead me away from a car he had. The point is this; A good Porsche salesman that has been around a long time has seen all the changes in the cars and knows what worked well and what didn’t. Also they will give you the name to the head mechanic at their shop and he can tell you the ends and outs of what to look for in a used car, the maintenance issues, and the good and bad points of what he has seen. This will also help determine if the salesman was telling you the truth. <O

. Its not advice if i'd be offering anyone.Btw you also dont need a salesman to tell you the head mechanics name...Reception can advise you of that
.
Exactly, What he said.
Obviously you have never done a sales course or are familiar with the art of selling. If you are unsure or dont know what you want before walking in to a dealership then you will be very easy prey my friend. Customers like this are a salesmans dream.Salesmen are results and commission driven and being able to tell BS doesnt come into it with a good salesman as you will never know (afterall how would you know when you are unsure of what you even want). Its all about planting that seed and harvesting the crop. Anyhow you do what you want with the salesman advice gig....thats totally fine by me

.If your research and gut can't tell you when a salesman is giving you BS then you might want to pay some1 to buy the car for you.
Good luck w/ your purchase and I hope you get exactly what you end up being the most happy w/.
Let us know what you get, I'm sure it will be awesome!
That is funny, because I think you know what you want, you just don't trust yourself. I know this and don't know you. I can tell you that when the salesman knows he hasn't got a sale and you aren't buying but he is willing to talk to you anyway there will be a lot less BS. I've never been to a sales class like you describe but I know this; Every1, that includes you, every1 sales themself every day. You sale yourself to your wife, kids, boss, family, friends, and best of all you sale yourself to yourself. Just because you don't realize it doesn't mean you don't do it.
If your research and gut can't tell you when a salesman is giving you BS then you might want to pay some1 to buy the car for you.

. Myself...im not in the market to buy anything at the moment. Ive already got a 997tt and i cant see much sense changing that at the moment as ive only done 6500kms on the clock since new and I still havent finished all my mods yet
.Now please dont get too wound up on the salesman thing OK. When the time comes round for me to trade this baby on the next newy I will have done my own homework very thoroughly prior to going into the P dealer.... that you can count on 100%. The Porsche salesmen I know are very polished acts and are always extremely nice guys and are very personable etc etc but at the end of the day they are salesmen....and one needs to recognise and accept that fact.
Now, for me, someone who knows a lot about what they are buying beforehand is always far better equiped to deal with any sales BS (if that is used) and yes... I can personally smell saleman BS a mile off. You ask how..why?....because i've employed enough of them in my lifetime and, I take the time and trouble to know all there is to know before I walk in the front door....and, i dont need nor rely upon advice from salesmen for that info....nor do you or, the OP. Your choice tho..

My original point regarding to your post was that your suggestion to the OP to go and ask a salesmans advice/opinion was flawed as it was dependant upon a salesmans vehicle stockholding, his personality, sales methods and many other variables. The remainder of your post's suggestions were sound ...all good etc
. No worries..

2 years ago I would agree. The price difference was 60K+. However nowadays where the price difference between the used cars is only 30% this isn't such a huge issues anymore. I still maintain and I don’t care how many 997TT posters disagree in this thread; If you buy a 996TT especially X50 and toss 8K into it you will have faster and better handling 911 variant than the stock 997TT – setting the looks aside, which is purely subjective.

.Anyway weve already covered this ground. At the end of the day no matter what argument is put up it (again) it all comes down to money (As per bbywu....) never a truer word spoken.
Lets all not keep on with this
. The OP has all the info he's ever likely to get from this thread without all of us going on and on and over and over the same old ground repeatedly
.Btw, have you noticed how the word "price" and "money" is so often used in arguing which is the better car.
