Grinding noise?

Ok, so this is weird... All of a sudden tonight when coming to a stop, I hear and feel through the pedals a grinding noise. Then, I notice that when I turn or brake I get a grinding noise. I came to a stop, looking around the wheels, etc, nothing. Turned PSM off and did a big brake, and it cleared up.

So, was it PSM going nuts on me (doubtful, but I mentioned it because I did it) or....

It scares me... It seems fine now (drove it about 1/2 mile home after it 'fixed') but..

Recent car wash? Sounds like your rotors were wet/rusted.

I had that problem once and it turned out to be a small pebble stuck between the rotor and the backing plate. Nothing worse than an intermittent problem!

Barrett, that was exactly my thought, but I didn't want to say it on here (because I'd just get a lot of 'Yea, that could be it' responses) but I'm glad someone else came up with the same symptom/issue. That's kinda what it sounded like, and I drove it this morning and all was fine, so hopefully that's all it was. This car is only a week old to me, so I'm ultra paranoid.

Just came back from lunch, it did it again.

Only thing in common was that both started during an agressive left turn. This time, I turned left and right on the wheel around 30mph, and it stopped (almost felt like something popped out or something)

Any ideas?

Maybe suspension related if its only happening under load. If you can, jack the front end up and spin the wheels by hand. I had to take a long thin screw driver and pry out the pebble on my car, it's possible that it's still stuck.

UPDATE:

So I pulled both front wheels, no rocks in the brake shields or anywhere around the brakes that I can see.

Also, I notice now that when I make an 'aggressive' left turn, I can hear AND feel a light grinding noise. Car is going to the dealer tomorrow, but any ideas?

i noticed the same problem today. Mine occurs when I am slowing down and turning into a driveway and it feels like something is grinding but in reality it is the ABS engaging on one of the wheels. i recently noticed this after i installed some coilovers. the chief porsche tech tried to explain to me why this was occurring but i couldn't really understand it. Thats why if you turn off the PSM it won't make the same sound. in my case, the is a pulsating sensation which is accompanied by a grinding type sound which in reality is the ABS going on and off.

I can't imagine this is normal. It's so loud it's embarrassing when I'm turning left at an intersection, etc. And, it only occurs when turning left.

I guess we'll see what the dealer says.

Drove it around the block this morning to test your theory. PSM off.. No change, still the noise.

maybe you have a different noise. when i was at the dealership, the chief tech told me that the GT3 had the same suspension as the damptronics and that they had just sold a car to someone and the new owner was complaining of all these strange noises in the front of the car. to prove that these noises were not unusual, they had to pull out a different GT3 to show him that it made the same noises. I'd take your car back to the dealer to see what they say but don't be surprised if it is "normal"
best of luck

It just can't be. If that is their answer, they can kiss my ***, haha. I've owned several sports cars, including a 996tt, and have NEVER heard a noise like this.
