Official APR Tuned 997TT FAQ Thread......
madsex,
thanks for chiming in. It sounds to me that the APR tune is great for up to 220km/hr or so and the reason you wanted more is really for speeds beyond that. Is that about right? For me, I'll rarely get above 220km/hr so I'm most interested in max performance below that speed.
I'm eagerly awaiting the results of APR tune with pump gas and 200 cell cats!!!!!!!!

It is indeed great for up to those speeds and you are "about right" there..
But in all fairness if you can achieve the same results or even possibly slightly better (not verified yet) with a custom tune with half the cost then why wait? I used only pump gas (premium) and had 200cell cats so I can tell you this moment that in Greek cold November weather with a brand new clutch (Stage 2 Sachs) the car did 100-200 in anywhere from 6 to 6.5 sec! Could not pull a solid/good dedicated 60-130mph since the limiter is stock @ 6750 and the manual car did seem to hit the limiter shortly before reaching 130 mph so I had to gear up ...
On the "Skandalis car issue" I can not comment other than that if he says he has achieved that time it is 100pct true! BUT he has an intake that he says has improved his times + very very light wheels that may also play a role... Other than that I don;t know the specific run details (gas, altitude, temps etc) but have seen some variations myself when conducting my own tests.. I may achieve a very best time once that can be verified for the list here but may not be repeatable..

Now having said all of the above IF THE FLASH HAD BEEN CHEAPER AND ACCORDING TO THE COMPETITORS AT THE MOMENT I TRIED IT I WOULD PROBABLY HAD BOUGHT AS WELL!!! The car felt very very good at that time was running flawlessly and I had the added benefit of changing settings on the fly... Now it took me quite some time and effort to match (and hopefully surpass) that, but at the moment I am again very happy with the performance of my car, thanks to a very reputable tuner and very good friend of mine!

.P.S. Perhaps if the APR tune was better priced and if I knew for ceratin that I would only need a Stage 1 upgrade for as long as I have the car and was happy with that performance level I would pull the trigger on it... All in all (even though I still don;t know what boost it runs) it is a very attractive flash with great torque... excellent for daily drives and quick -short bursts!
Ofcourse I have since seen the light again and will have thorough datalogs and vbox results hopefully when it cools down a little in a couple of months from my current flash/exhaust setup!

Interesting that you still prefer the custom tune tho. I'll PM you on that
.Speed21 I can only name one tuner in the USA that actually still owns a 997T since tuning it. There is nothing wrong with buying a car to test and tune it for R&D, and then sell it aftwwards. Keep in mind they have 4 race teams to run and no one needs a 150+ k car just laying around. Once the R&D is done and the software is released there is no need for the car anymore. They don't go to any Porsche shoes and they don't need it in their shop to give customers test drives and they aren't going to race it so why keep it? I'm sure it was purely a financial business decision. They also did several marketing events with this car. Keep in mind this was 4 years ago when they bought it.
So if a 997tt P car doesnt do it for them as a dd what do they drive? Just curious.

As we have discussed in a past thread about this time and the graph this time was achieved WITH AN OFF THE SHELVE TUNE FROM A GREEK TUNER - NOT APR !
It was done back in winter time AFTER I TRIED THE APR AND COULD NOT GET A 60-130 TIME BECAUSE OF THE LIMITER... Best I ever saw wth APR was 6sec flat 100-200 with 2 shifts and was usually around 6.2-6.4 with one shift! Hope this clears it for you and 7.18 was a pretty good time for just a flash and exhaust indeed until Skandalis came with his APR tip and his verified 6.48sec time...

Now since then I have retuned (but have a stock exhaust - waiting on a new one) and have been getting times of 6.2-6.3 100-200 as I am now! Hopefully the new exhaust will give me an edge...
The limiter on all other tunes except APR is set @ 7100 for me...
Regards
A lot of these guys are die hard Audi/VW guys. I went to dinner with one of the APR guys last night who is on is (get this), 6th GTi. He's like 23 or so years old. These guys LOVE wrenching on their cars (read, crazy swaps).
Could some of the guys drive 997s if they wanted. Sure. A lot of them have families they would rather spend the money on, and have really really fun, very well sorted other cars that they still attach a nostalgic value to.
I can answer a few APR questions as I sit here in the lobby and have talked with them EXTENSIVELY.

I'm actually sitting in the lobby of APR right now. Outside I see a B8 S4, a B5 A4, a new Passat, a MK6 GTi, a B5 S4, B6 A4, MK5 GTi and a B6 S4. Some of those are customer cars, though I don't know which exactly. The B8 S4, MK6 GTi, B5 S4 and B6 A4 are the only ones I know for sure.

Not to say they cant tune a 997tt....as their tune is evidently very fast and powerfull. Moreso it appears they werent sufficiently up to speed with the culture and mindset of the typical Porsche owner so to remove any barriers which surface in the decision making process..
Can you ask if they would ever consider redoing the tune with the dual functionality and accomodate for the gauge to ensure it also reads the boost correctly in both modes?

Ok, fine, its as i thought then. So they are still mainly Audi VW people and as that is where their passions lie therefore havent grasped the opportunty to move forward to any great depth into the Porsche brand. This also may well give some reasoning behind why they didnt uphold the dual tune function between normal and SC modes.....obviously being not an Audi VW customer requirement.

Give them a call. They always answer their phones. Talk to them. I don't know the details of the hangup that they had, but APR is more than capable. I'll read through this thread a bit more thoroughly and see what exactly is going on, and try and find an answer.

1) My best guess as to why they didn't incorporate the SC function was that it was unnecessary. APR tunes cars to make a great deal of power, however, this is often not the maximum power. They have a dyno room with a bazillion instruments which is running constantly (even with sound deadening, I can attest to a V8 being in the building). They run the crap out of these motors on these tunes, pushing temperatures, run times etc. APR then makes and thoroughly refines each tune so that the maximum power can be made while retaining stock like drivability and without compromise to any components of the car (though the clutch may be debatable - you can toast a clutch in any car if you drive it hard enough, no matter how loud the fun pedal is....). By adding the SC function, they would either have to A) decrease the performance of their thoroughly refined program or B) allow performance levels to pass the predetermined threshold. Why? If you would like to elaborate on why you want this feature, perhaps I can answer more accurately.
B) I disagree. Porsche owners want performance, reliability and refinement. Every APR product I have ever used or witnessed, has worn these titles proudly. If I am missing something that "Porsche" owners want, perhaps it's more a "996/7T" owners desire. Elaborate on this.
C) I see no reason why the gauge shouldn't always read correctly. I am not an engineer however. That said, the accomplishments of APR in the software department have far exceeded merely getting a gauge to calibrate correctly so I see this as a small hurdle. I'm in fact VERY surprised to hear that this is not the case currently. Is this confirmed or speculated based on the world-famous mystery-Greek?

I wouldn't go so far as to say their passions don't lie with the Porsche community, perhaps not their personal passions, but as a company, I can very safely say that the only thing APR cares about is making the VAG cars OEM+. They have taken that route on all the tunes they have done, by increasing performance without any other sacrifice. No corners were cut, no shortcuts were taken. I'm frankly shocked by the impressions in the Porsche world.
I cant speak for every Porsche owner but i certainly dont like the idea of having my sports chrono removed into just the one tune setting regardless of how good their tune may or may not be. Incidentally all other tuners i looked at accomodate for the two mode settings. I suspect the long time Porsche tuners are far more in touch with the Porsche product and their customers expectations in a way that APR has yet to discover.
You being "shocked" confirms my thinking that VW and Audi customers have completely different expectations than Porsche customers. I'm assuming that you own a VW or Audi? Many Porsche owners have owned more than just one Porsche in their lifetime so have come to expect certain things as a bare minimum. You also need to be mindful that the Sports chrono function was not a cheap option in this car.
Give them a call. They always answer their phones. Talk to them.
No need for me to call and educate them. Its their product and their business therefore as it is in their interest to get a complete understanding of the product and market they are seeking to service they should do so. At this point in time they have missed my tune business and for one of the reasons being the above.....amongst other things. If i were them i would definately reinstate the dual function for those with SC. One mode simply doesnt cut it imo. May work for some but not for all. Majority of these cars have SC.
I don't know the details of the hangup that they had, but APR is more than capable.
Not suggesting APR are incapable, moreso simply out of touch in a number of key areas.
I'll read through this thread a bit more thoroughly and see what exactly is going on, and try and find an answer.

.I'll try and answer this the best I can. Mind you I am a customer and am in no way affiliated with the company. This is simply the experience, impression and philosophies imparted on me by the company.

Their decision, and, your guess.

Thats all well and good pointing out what APR does hotsauce but Porsche only tuners are also far from stupid and have been working soley on the Porsche product for a very long time so there's really not much new of any real benefit to anyone here by elaborating on APR's facility.
By adding the SC function, they would either have to A) decrease the performance of their thoroughly refined program or B) allow performance levels to pass the predetermined threshold. Why? If you would like to elaborate on why you want this feature, perhaps I can answer more accurately.
No offense but no sense you, me, or anyone else second guessing why they didn't accomodate for the SC function. Again it is in APR's interest to do their market research by finding these things out (preferably beforehand). I have merely pointed out one obvious discrepancy between their tune and every other Porsche tuner's tune (for their benefit too). Its completely up to them whether they wish to do anything about that but if they were indeed serious about making inroads they would do so. My guess tho is that they have their hands way too full with VW's and Audis.

I have sufficiently elaborated my concerns and questions right throughout this thread and, the previous APR Tune thread.
C) I see no reason why the gauge shouldn't always read correctly.
Exactly!!

Yes, you and a number of members on this thread.
Is this confirmed or speculated based on the world-famous mystery-Greek?
LOL
I think you have your answer there already. And be my guest if you wish to ask Skand to produce his durametric 1 bar data log boost info. I'm completely done with that. Its clearly obvious that does not exist nor will ever be produced.

Without wanting to repeat myself, my verified 60-130mph here was done with a Greek tune and exhaust and my current tests for 100-200 with nothing else than a flash (no exhaust) that show 6.2 - 6.3 times constantly in summer heat have been achieved after some fine tuning with another vendor NOT APR!

TT, madsex has a new tuner, not his previous greek tuner, and not APR. The "new" tuner's tune is giving him these new times in his hot weather testing.
I am very curious what he will achieve. Its looking promising.
Maybe its time for me to buy a Vbox and do some testing too
. All this talk of fast times i think i better see where i sit
. Really!!

watching the detectives
Sometimes, the Poet gives us our answers. In this strange and amusing case, Elvis Costello hits the "ten" ring with a line from his black-humor classic, "Watching The Detectives", to wit, "She's filing her nails while they're dragging the lake".
Matthew @ GMP has been brave, true, and steadfast in defense of APR, now twisting slowly in the wind, waiting for Mr. Green @ USP to find a reliable source of electricity for his computer, for our friend Skandalis to produce ANYTHING he's promised, waiting for....for...for...APR TO SAY ANYTHING AT ALL IN DEFENSE/EXPLANATION OF THEIR PRODUCT(s), METHODS, AND COMPANY.
I understand that Porsche is not the key stone of APR's business...Audi/VW is. However, their baffling conduct in this little tableau has reached the point where the negative rub-off will, I believe, leave very smelly skid marks on their core business. Obviously, no one at APR has made the connection that many of us here have/do own other German cars. We spend stupid amounts of money not only on our Porsches, but our Audis and VW's, too.
Speed21, Matthew, et al, thank you for your good work.
APR, your silence is deafening. And most telling.
