airbag removal - question/help

guys - trying to get the airbag out so I can install some carbon trim on steering wheel. after disconnecting the battery i have tried various size flat head screwdrivers as well as a few size hex tools. I believe you push to release a retaining wire or clasp of some type but I have pushed, turned, tapped lightly with a hammer etc etc. Am i supposed to say a magic word or something?? I tried f--k you but it did not work. . How hard do you push? Pushed pretty hard but do not want to break anything. TIA.

I always use a flat headed screw driver, hold it with the blade north to south then stick it in the hole and push up. It might take a few trys because sometimes just one of the release points release.
You are not going to break anything, just push really hard and quick and the airbag will pop out.
Feel free to email me if you need any further assistance.

Definitely the hardest part of installing a new wheel.

You have to push VERY hard to deform the retaining wire. Would also help if you have someone pulling on the edge of the airbag at the same time to get it loose. Good luck.

Chewy is infamous around these parts
If you disconnect the air bag (even with the battery disconnected) will it throw a code that needs to be reset?

Nope. You'll get a dash light at startup after reconnecting everything, but it will go away after a short drive.

Guys - thx for feedback, realized I never posted a pic. replaced the faux aluminum steering wheel controls with Carbon fiber.
