Check your nuts (and bolts!) regularly

Not those ones.

I was washing my car the other day and noticed that the left tip on my AWE exhaust was sticking out farther than the right one. I thought just the tip had come loose like it had when I first had the exhaust put on but upon closer examination I discovered that the tailpipe section after the muffler can was loose enough to allow a bit of swivelling. I don't know if the tailpipe would have eventually fallen off but I do remember that picture of the burnt rear fascia from the tip that fell off another 6speeders car. Don't need that wallet draining failure thank you.

I tried tightening the clamps but it didn't hold b/c I wasn't able to properly push the tailpipe piece further into the muffler "lip" without elevating the car. I'm taking it in next week to have all connections checked. This is scary, as it was originally tight. I understand that with heat/cold cycling a joint can loosen but I didn't really expect this. Has it happened to anyone else?

I think someone reported losing a stock exhaust tip a year or two ago. Went flying off on the freeway.

I would have thought repeated heat expansion would have made for a more solid connection.

stock exhaust tip can strip after a few remove and replacements, the are frankly cheap flimsy parts when you compare them to the 997.2 TT tips. Dont overtighten them, snug is fine as when it heats up they expand.

Mine is the AWE exhaust and tips. The clamps look really heavy duty. I would also have thought the heat cycles would have helped keep them tight but it doesn't look that way unfortunately.

Had everything checked and tightened today. Shop says that if they come loose again it may be worth tack welding the bolt so it doesn't back off. Hopefully doesn't come to that...

I'd use a lock washer or even a lock nut on it.

TT Surgeon has written numerous times that the modular exhausts that are clamped together tend to loosen...he has recommended frequent checks and retightening due to problems like this...its good that you are having the system checked

Red loctite can withstand heat, so it should help.

It can also be a pain in the you know what when it comes time to remove it.

I must've missed those posts. What brands of exhaust are not modular, i.e. are full weld up to the tips? Just curious, I'm not about to replace the exhaust. At least now I know to check it regularly and get the tack weld if necessary.
