MIS-FIRE Cyl. #3
MIS-FIRE Cyl. #3
I am asking for opinions and advice. I have noticed at WOT/ Boost a sputtering and misfire. I have 23k on the car with 14-15k on the tune. A diagnosis scan and evaluation indicated a misfire in cylinder #3. Question- should I just change the spark pulgs and have the oil changed (OC interval ) or should I also replace all the coil packs since they are already changing the spark plugs ?
Suggestions would be appreciated. I have an APR tune with FVD exhaust. The mechanic has just returned to this facility having spent the last 4 years working at APR. He indicated that the tune was operating properly and set up for Bosch Porsche OEM plugs and Porsche OEM coil packs. The work cannot begin until the team returns from Petite LeMans- Road Atlanta where they have several Division Cup Cars in the field. That being said, a quick response-prior to a next tuesday service appt., would be most excellent.

I had about the same mileage on my EVOMSit tune, did not get any misfires / codes but the car in 3rd gear did not feel as fast as it did 10k a go. After the plugs were tossed in last week, gapped to what the tuners recommend (used factory plugs) the car feels pulls noticeably harder in the higher gears.
Pretty much this should be a 20k change when flashed.

If I were you, I would look at the plugs first before you decide to change the coils...If the plugs look bad, then you'll be fine with plugs only....If the plugs look good, I would change the coils also just to be safe...
I went with the hotter plugs & coil packs from BBI Autosport in Huntington Beach CA & luv 'em, seems most people here where recommending changing plugs a lot quicker on modded cars.

I had my plugs changed out at 17k. The plugs looked fine when we pulled them out, but there was definite hesitation in the higher gears at WOT. We replaced them with OEM plugs gapped lower and now the car pulls much much harder.
F/U and ? on 15/50 oil
Well, as a follow-up. Some of the team stayed behind, to include my man from APR, as all the carriers and support left for Road Atlanta. After removing the turbos, bumper etc. and dropping the engine we replaced the plugs and coil pacs with OEM as recommended by the APR techie. " the tune is specific for OEM plugs and pacs " The car is much improved. It was interesting that in Sport Mode he stated that my timing was slightly retarded and ran mildly rich. He stated that the tune was developed without sport mode on- just turn PSAM on for the suspension. I am going to look into this matter further.
Lastly, at their recommendation we put in Mobil 1 - 15/50 as opposed to 0/40. Their reasoning was that it did not get to cold here in the South and it would reduce idle chatter a bit. Any thoughts ?

I would not use 15w50 as it may affect the variocam. The variocam uses hydraulic columns of oil to regulate the cam timing variations and it is supposedly very sensitive to oil viscosity
