Painting PCM void warranty?

I asked my Porsche dealer for a quote to refinish PCM unit and A/C control in black. The quote was ok, the problem is they told me it would void the warranty of these units. How could putting paint on the front plate of the PCM void the warranty? It seems completely absurd to me. I know that a few of the members here painted their PCMs; did any of you had issue with their warranty being void after it?

I did this as a DIY one month ago...Many interior parts were painted silver to match exterior colour...I will post pics...The problem is that this job is very time consuming and difficult,a specialised electronic is needed to fully open the PCM unit and dissasemble it so to get the front faceplate clear (without any button) ready for painting...In order to do so,you have to remove the warranty sticker and open the main case...obviously warranty is void...

Thx for the info. I didn't think you had to do so much to remove the front plate of the PCM.. Well I guess I may wait until I run out of warranty before doing it.

That is absurd. How can removing a plastic part (basically a plastic cover for the center console) void the PCM's warranty? If you need to remove a sticker on the PCM and an authorized Porsche dealer does it (and documents it) that should not effect the warranty. I could see how doing it yourself might pose a problem but thats a different story.

I was thinking of doing the same thing (painting it satin black). I dont like the gun barrel grey and the rest of my interior is completely blacked out in leather (including the vents). That gray really sticks out . I also didn't know that taking the front plastic plate out was so involved. One way to do it is have the dealer remove the plastic cover and send it off to Eric at Bumper Plugs. He has a great reputation for doing excellent work. After its done you will have to go back to the dealer to have it installed. If the dealer has a good body shop and you trust it that could work too.

I am curious what the dealer wanted to charge you? If its more than 6 or 7 hundred it would not be worth it to me.

Good Luck

This is the first I'm hearing of anyone doing this. Don't mean to derail but can someone post some pictures of this done?

for the same reason we buy aftermarket LED tail lights instead of doing a full OEM conversion: money doesn't grow it oil fields.

Doesn't removing the plastic cover entails opening the PCM and therefore voiding the warranty?
Can you remove the cover without opening the electronic box?
Dealer wanted 820 tax inluded for both PCM and A/C controls.
It may be a little high but I wanted them to do it was because I didn't want any prob with warranty and because I trust them working on my car.
